Serial Watcher – Lost – Episodes 4-13, 4-14

Shows, Top Story

The boat (With Des, Jin, Sun, Aaron and Michael) is loaded with explosives, Richard and The Others have Kate and Sayid, Jack and Sawyer are after Hurly, who’s with Locke and Ben at The Orchid, as Ben walks directly into Martin’s men. Oh, and in the future the Oceanic Six (Jack, Kate, Sun, Hurly, Sayid and Aaron) are lying about everything while some of them find new strengths and other begin a meltdown. And the numbers are back. That’s where we left off two weeks ago, LET’S GET IT ON!

And I already love it as the previously takes us back to the season finale that kicked the asses of all season finales – the one from season 3. If my feeling is right, this one will be even better.

Flash Forward: YES! We pick up exactly where we left last year, at the airstrip. Kate backs up and find out who was in the coffin. And it does us no good as it’s someone named Jeremy Bentham – whom we’ve never heard of before. And she reads jack the riot act not only for believing the things Jeremy apparently said, but for suggesting they have to go back to the island after the terrible things that happened on the day they left. But what are those things? And if the things on the island really take place on the day that they left, does this mean the next two weeks will take place after the Oceanic Six have left and they’re trying to go back?

On the Island: Jack and Sawyer find Hurly(peeing)! That’s one warm reunion. And the meeting with Locke, who’s just wondering around The Orchid is even warmer (Yeah right).

On the Boat: The explosives are wired with a radio-controlled detonator. Not nice. And any way they may think about disarming it will only end the same – BOOM.

On the Island: Martin is taking Ben to the chopper, and he realizes that someone was helping frank. And then Kate runs out, saying she’s chased by The Others. I think she’s actually working with them as part of a ruse, but we’ll see. And an awesome fight scene begins! Kate and Ben use the chaos to escape and Martin, after all his men die (one way or another) is after them until SAYID(!) blocks him off and an even better one-on-one fight scene begins. Martin has the upper hand (Despite being stabbed by Sayid), until RICHARD(!!!) shoots him and hopefully kills him. Remember the Jack/Locke reunion? The Ben/Richard one was warmer. And the deal was that Kate and Sayid help The Other in exchange for getting off the island. Ben honors this deal, telling them to use the chopper. He always knows something no-one else does.

Flash Forward: Hurly’s at the asylum, and he has a visitor. WALT(!) I think it’s the original Walt but he grew so much I can’t be sure. None of the Six came to visit him when they came back, but (Who the hell is) Jeremy Bentham did. And we get another piece of the puzzle. All those who did not come back are probably alive, including Michael (But Hurly could have just said Michael’s there just so he wouldn’t hurt Walt).

On the Island: Hurly and Sawyer feat on the eons-old crackers as Jack and Locke have some alone time. Again Locke wants everyone to stay on the island, again Jack sends him to hell (He’ll regret that in the future). So now Locke asks him to lie about everything that’s happened on the island, saying it’s not an island but rather a place where miracles happen. And he’s going to prove it. Here’s Ben and he’s about to start something with Locke, as he sends Jack, Hurly and Sawyer back to the chopper and off the island. I still hate Locke, but his parting words to Jack were awesome – “Lie to them Jack. If you do it half as well as you lie to yourself, they’ll believe you.” And then he and Ben descent into The Orchid.

On the Boat: – Michael and has a plan to disarm the explosives. Hope it works. Apparently it’s a crazy plan to freeze the battery. Whatever. I bet Sayid arrives and he’s able to fix things.

On the Island: Dan’s back for the next group of Lostaways. Seeing him and Juliet together just reminds me how I never truly trusted either of them, and still don’t. He wants Miles and Charlotte to go back with him, but for some reason Miles seems complacent and he’s in no hurry. WAIT WAIT WAIT! He says Charlotte “came back here” but she’s acting like she doesn’t understand him. Was it a comeback for Miles too? Were she or they originally Dharma or Others?
At The Orchid, Ben gives Locke the Orchid’s orientation video to watch, as he gets to business. According to the video, Dharma used the island’s features to conduct experiments in space and time. There’s a vault there, and just like a microwave, no metallic objects should ever be placed in it. So why is Ben loading it with all the metal he can find? The video goes bonkers before Locke can see the time-travelling-bunny experiment. DAMN! Someone on the ground just called up the elevator. I think it’s Jack, but wouldn’t mind seeing another badass Ben fight.
And it’s probably Jack, as Hurly and Sawyer went back to the chopper without him. Nope, I spoke too soon, he’s right behind them. So who’s at The Orchid? Anyway, we have a nice catch-up between Jack, Sawyer, Kate, Sayid and Hurly. In the mean time, Sawyer cuts Frank open and they’re off. That’s a lovely shot of the chopper with island and ocean below it. They all seem so relieved; too bad it won’t last long.
HOLY SHIT!!!!! MARTIN IS NOT DEAD AND HE’S AT THE ORCHID! What the hell is he, the terminator? Ben should have confirmed his death by putting two bullets through his head rather than count on the three that went in his back (And were probably stopped by a bulletproof vest). Damn Martin is an evil man – the radio detonator is connected to a heart rate monitor, so if Martin’s heart stops working – the boat goes boom. Evil, but smart. Locke distracts him as Ben tries to attack from behind and stabs him (to death?). I guess it was to death, as the radio transmitter starts beeping. Damn. Ben doesn’t seem to mind that he sentenced everyone on the boat to death. I wonder if they can reverse the process by strapping the transmitter on Locke or Ben.
Back on the beach, Charlotte tells Dan (Who’s still wearing a tie for some reason, it just annoying) that she stays on the island for now, mentioning she’s still looking for the place she was born. Juliet also stays until the next shift, so it seems like Dan is only taking redshirts with him now, so don’t be surprised if the zodiac drowns with everyone on it.

On the Boat: Michael is freezing the battery as Des is trying to figure out which wire he should cut. Now they realize they need to get everyone off the boat if they want them ton stay safe. It’s like Rock-Lostaways-Hard Place.

On the Chopper: They’re losing fuel. Not good. Frank wants to land somewhere but Jack won’t let him, telling him to just look for the boat. I think it’s that “crossing a timeline” thing that’s blocking the view of the boat.
NO NO NO!!! Sawyer’s about to do something heroic and stupid, don’t do it! In an effort to save reduce the weight on the chopper, HE JUST JUMPS OFF THE CHOPPER TO THE OCEAN! Whoo, I was sure the fall would kill him but it didn’t, so now he’s swimming to the beach. Before he jumped he whispered something in Kate’s ear, asking her to do something. I couldn’t make out what it was, but I could definitely make out the kiss he planted on her. So again, Sawyer saves the day. I like Sawyer.

(This is the moment where they would probably cut this long episode into two regular sized ones for international distribution. But we don’t care about that.)

Flash Forward: Sayid is making a hit outside the mental institute Hurly stays at. I assume he’s there to save Hurly from something. Again, Bentham comes up. But apparently it’s not his real name. I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess that Bentham is Ben (I know, too simplistic). I love the little talk Hurly and Sayid had about Paranoia. I love Hurly. Anyway, it’s not safe for him there any more, he has to go with Sayid and he does.
HOLD IT! MISTER ECKO! Apparently Hurly believes he’s been playing chess with him (and winning). Granted, we can’t see Ecko, but on lost that doesn’t mean he’s not there.

On the Chopper: They finally see the boat.

On the Island Ben still doesn’t care about the people on the boat, as long as Martin’s dead. He vows to find Widmore before Widmore finds him. Martin dies and we must cut to the boat because…

On the Boat: – the red light on the detonator just went on. Not good. Michael’s using what ever is left in the tank to keep the battery frozen for just a few more minutes. In the mean time the chopper’s landed so Frank can put a band aid on the fuel line and refuel before taking off again to avoid the bomb. The chopper finally takes off with Jack, Hurly, Kate, Sun, Aaron and Des. Jin doesn’t make it and Michael’s is still inside with the bomb.
HOLY HELL CHRISTIAN SHEPHERD! AND THE BOAT EXPLODES! Christian told Michael he can go now, so I assume he’s free to die after fulfilling his mission. And Jin? I guess he just died. Back on the chopper Sun is breaking down as Jack tells Frank to fly back to the island. Is this the last time I wrote “On the Boat:” in my reviews?

Flash Forward: Sun is in London, my favorite city in the world, following Charles Widmore (Mental note to self, visit that restaurant Widmore just left during my next visit). She confronts him, saying they have some shared business interests and that they’re not the only ones who left the island. I hope he doesn’t try to kill her now. He, and I, wonder why she’d want to help him.

On the Island: Ben is stuffing more metal into the vault and turns it on. Again, just like a microwave oven, sparks fly.
Sawyer made his way back to the beach and he meets Juliet, mourning for the boat (And the people who were on it, I guess).
Back in The Orchid, Ben is putting on the parka he wore when he woke up in the desert, saying he’s going somewhere cold without Locke. They bid farewell as Ben explains that the person who moves the island can never go back to it. He also adds that Locke is now the leader of The Others – something he was afraid of, I guess, this whole time. It was a manly farewell between these too, just a handshake, not a hug. Outside The Orchid, The Others welcome John “home”.
Back in The Orchid, Ben steps through the blown-up vault and makes his way to what looks like a frozen, ancient shrine, hence the need for a parka. He has to turn a giant wheel, some kind of millstone. I guess this is how the island moves, as it makes a sound heard all over, even on the zodiac and the chopper.
HOLY SHIT THE ISLAND IS GONE! I was expecting it for two weeks but still, HOLY SHIT! There was a white flash and it’s just not there anymore. Juliet, Sawyer, Charlotte, Miles, Locke, Richard and The Others were still on it when it happened. Is this the last time I wrote “On the Island:” in my reviews?

On the chopper: No fuel and no island mean big trouble, and it’s time to put on the life vests before crashing into the ocean. Is this the last time I wrote “On the Chopper:” in my reviews? Is this the last time an aircraft carrying these people will crash? (I guess jot, if Jack has something to do with it)

The chopper survivors make their way to the life boat that Sayid was wise enough to inflate before the crash. Des almost drowns but they save him. I have no idea how Aaron made it unharmed, but I guess the island may still be keeping him safe.

(Side note – while it’s usually better to watch shows in HD, this shot right now, of Jack in the lifeboat shows the limitations HD because it makes it clear that they were shooting using green screen, as the background just seems like it’s being screened behind him.)

Flash Forward Kate’s getting a scary phone call in the middle of the night. Sorry, but just like Sawyer’s whispers, I couldn’t make it out. But it’s enough to startle her and send her for her gun.
HOLY SHIT CLAIRE!!! CLAIRE IS WITH AARON! Claire is telling not to dare bring him back (I guess to the island?).
Wait, it was just a dream. But again, it’s Lost, there’s no such thing as just a dream. But still, Kate runs to Aaron’s room and tells him she’s sorry. But what for?

On the Lifeboat: I guess this is the lifeboat that leads the Oceanic Six to their rescue, but there are two men too many on it. Jack is still refusing the acknowledge the supernatural aspects off all this, or that the island moved.
And here’s the boat they were looking for. But then again, the last time a Lost season finale involved a strange boat in the middle of the night, Walt was taken by The Others, so I wouldn’t be so quick to call it rescue. Then again, it’s possible I’m only overanalyzing it.
Finally the penny drops for Jack and he realizes Locke was right – they have to lie about everything. He doesn’t really make a great case for it, but he says he’ll do the talking, so everyone else will just follow his lead. But still, what about Des and Frank?
HOLY SHIT PENNY WIDMORE!!! That’s Penny’s boat!!! As opposed to last year’s “Not Penny’s Boat” message on Charlie’s hand. Now that’s a warm reunion. Des introduces everyone to Penny.
And we jump in time one week ahead, as the Oceanic Six are getting ready to leave for Membata, the island where they’re supposed to rescued from in order for their lies to be believable. And that’s where we say goodbye (for now?) to Frank and Des. And 8-9 hours later, they reach the island.

Flash Forward: We go back to the opening of the episodes, after Kate left Jack. He’s breaking into the funeral parlor and goes for the coffin. Will we finally see who’s in it?
DAMN IT BEN IS THERE! Not in the coffin but behind Jack. That kills my simplistic Bentham is Ben theory as they talk about this Bentham dude. So who’s left? Could he be Locke, Sawyer or Richard?
Anyway, Ben has information for Jack – the island will not let him come alone, that’s why his flights don’t crash on it. They all have to go back and Ben has a few ideas on how to do that, and they must bring back the man in the coffin.
AND THE MAN IN THE COFFIN IS LOCKE!!! CUT TO BLACK, SEE YOU IN 2009!

Holy hell, that was an excellent way to finish this season. We got so many answers about things that happened throughout the season as well as last year – we finally know who the man in the coffin was. Granted, it did not have the huge series altering move from the season 3 finale, with the first ever flash forward, but it still takes us in a new direction, as I guess now the show will focus on the way back to the island and the terrible things that happened after the Oceanic Six left. Lost is by far the best written TV drama today, even better than my favorite Friday Night Lights. The thrill and suspense are so good they can almost drive me back to smoking. I can’t wait for season 5, I’m sure none of you can, we’ll just have to survive the six months ahead until it comes back.

Enjoy your summer.
