10 Thoughts On The Ultimate Fighter – 06.18.08

1) They’re starting the episode with the fight and eschewing all the “I’m doing this for X” stuff.. which means that the shenanigans that go on afterward must be awesome. I can’t wait.

2) CB is very difficult to like. I find myself rooting for Amir. This has nothing to do with editing or that CB kinda seems like a dick. I just hate the smarmy sneer he has on his face whenever he’s talking to the camera. I’d like to slap it off his face but then he’d murder me so much my cat would die, too.

3) The fight was pretty much a mirror image of last week until the 3:30 mark. Amir got up and hit CB with a couple of good shots and legitimately hurt him. He looked out of the fight for about a minute. That’s probably enough to give Amir the round. CB controlled most of the fight but never really hurt Amir.

4) Early in the 2nd round Amir had another couple good shots which led to CB taking him down and falling on him to rest. CB is gassed a minute in to round two. CB is on top of most of the round but most of it is resting. Amir does most of the damage in this round. I’d be shocked if this round didn’t go Amir.

5) I will now be shocked if CB takes the third round. His conditioning is obviously not even near what it should be. So much so that he had the opportunity to put Amir out with a choke and couldn’t finish it. By halfway through the third round Amir was still moving crisply and CB was throwing arm punches. It was of little surprise when Amir caught an arm and put the fight away. Good for him. Fantastic fight.

6) Well whatever happens, this sucks. This final would have been great. Vegas odds of it being Jesse that went crazy and did something stupid are coming in at -15000.

7) OK, really really really didn’t need the extreme closeup of his face getting stitched up. Got to see the shot, the iodine, and the actual stitching. Yuck.

8) Unshockingly, it is Jesse who went to the Palace Station hotel in Vegas. He kicked out the window of a limo and then went in to the hotel and started terrorizing women and screaming at security that he was a UFC fighter. Dana kicks him out of the UFC. Why in the world would you win the show and then do anything other than go home, see your kid, and start training your face off? So, the only question is are they putting CB back in or are they giving you the guy Jesse beat?

9) I understand why Dana did it this way. I don’t think he should. Amir already beat CB. He should get Tim since Tim was the guy who lost to Jesse and hasn’t actually lost to Amir. But… I have a feeling Dana wants CB in the final but couldn’t just give him the fight. There’s no real indication of how long after the show ended that this happened or how long these guys had to train for this surprise fight. I don’t know if CB had enough time to improve his conditioning for his second go round.

10) First round was a tough round to call. They were both really tentative for the first three minutes. Tim scored a knockdown. CB finished with a takedown. I think CB probably did a bit more work in that round.

11) About a minute in to the 2nd round CB’s mouth is open and he looks tired again. However, CB stunned Tim enough to have one of the biggest flurries I’ve seen this season. He threw haymakers and knees and got Tim to the ground. And it didn’t knock Tim out. Problem. Now he’s even more gassed than he was before. By the time four minutes were gone in the 2nd round, CB had thrown everything he had at Tim and was out of breath. His shots had nothing behind them. Tim couldn’t take advantage, though.

12) This fight is here for Tim to take. CB’s whipped. He’s going to make a mistake. If it goes to decision, CB will win. This is going exactly like CB/Amir so far. CB punched himself out in a round-and-a-half and now has to make it another round-and-a-half. Amir, however, pressed it to the win. Tim, similarly to the Jesse fight, was a bit too tentative and wasn’t pressing the advantage he had. The third round probably went to Tim. A lot of this hinges on how the first round was scored.

CB took the unanimous decision. Not surprised. I think it’s kinda dumb that the finals of the show is a rematch. I think they should have given the fight to Tim and just let CB fight someone else since it’s obvious he was going to be there anyway.

Good fights this season. Good show. I’m not looking forward to the finals but whatever, I guess.
