Make Movement: The Draft and The “Accident”

Columns

The WWE instead of doing something traditional, like deciding to suspend the contest in a normal fashion, has to go over-the-top doing a stunt that could always go wrong, in a effort to keep the “realism” and “drama” up in hopes that the ratings will continue to cross over next week. What I find offensive to the viewers, long-term ones like myself, is why does our intelligence have to be constantly challenged? With professional wrestling or “sports entertainment” always trying to be like a live action movie, what is it going to take for the WWE to realize that it is continually playing with fire? From the limo blowing up angle to now this, I’m so used to McMahon’s way of thinking, that I thought “oh this is a Undertaker angle” and “this is Vince’s way to stop the contest” – I didn’t tap into the idea that it could have been a serious injury. Why? Because Vince has pulled this trigger on stunts way too often. The worse part is with all the mainstream media attention, he goes off and does this “accident” storyline, which is always borderlining bad taste in the history of the business with the real life tragic situations that have happened…and he wonders why the mainstream media can never take him seriously.

As far as the draft goes, I have to admit, I was shocked. JR, Jeff Hardy and Triple H to Smackdown? Apparently, the brand really does want to depend on John Cena and Rey Mysterio, Jr. to carry in the ratings for RAW.

I suppose I have to enjoy the Triple H/Cena feud while I can based on the brand switch….but if Triple H retains and Edge doesn’t lose his belt, RAW would be “heavyweight championship class” beltless? That would be different.

C.M. Punk on RAW isn’t even a shock to me because he’s crossed over onto the brand from ECW so many times that it doesn’t even resonate as a gain. Hopefully C.M. can find a way to “bank” on being a breakout performer now, though I still think he should cash in his suitcase on Edge or if Cena wins the belt from Triple H, on Cena.

At least, Shawn Michaels and Jericho get to continue their compelling feud. It’s one of the strongest reasons to watch WRESTLING on RAW right now. ECW gains Matt Hardy after a brief Hardy Boyz reunion (and loss), and hopefully Hardy can find a way to capitalize himself on the show that is barely watched.

Melina’s possibly legit ankle injury is another blow to the Women’s Division – since we don’t know to what level the injury is, let’s hope she heals fast. I never thought I’d be on Melina’s side, but she’s won me over with her hard work and dedication to the Women’s Division.

It’ll be interesting of the impact Batista has to being on RAW now, especially now that Triple H is on Smackdown. Rey is going to be the main draw to the Smackdown viewers, but I never hear about fans who watch Smackdown who don’t automatically watch RAW anyway. With Batista on RAW, this gives Hardy a chance to become of the strongest babyface leaders on Smackdown now. The biggest joke of the night should have been Umaga moving to Smackdown…so we can see more Umaga versus Jeff Hardy now.

I’m glad Kane’s returning to RAW because I think him being anywhere else has been a true disservice to Kane’s character. He needs something to become fresh again and I feel like Kane’s character has really suffered over the years.

Mr. Kennedy being move to Smackdown should be helpful to the ratings too, and it’ll be interesting to see how he mixes it up, and if he stays a babyface. I’ll be happy when Kennedy is in a successful storyline program for longer than 2 months.

I don’t feel ECW is getting pushed though at least they still have Big Show, they are of course the show with no momenteum from the draft.
