Murtzcellanious – LIVE Canadian Idol Recap – July 29

Shows

Back again with your Canadian Idol results.

My prediction before the show started was that Sebastian, Mookie and Mitch would be in the bottom 3 with Mitch leaving the Idol stage. So far, it hasn’t really been a good year for me in terms of Idol prognostication so we would see if my 0-1 record would even out at the end of Tuesday’s episode.

The show started off with the Top 8 contestants performing “My Generation.” Sebastian stood up on the judges’ desk and Earl rolled in on a skateboard and both acts definitely captured the crowd’s attention. I have to say that it might just be the best group performance that I have ever seen (although I am still partial to one from Season 2 when the Idols sang a medley that included “I Love Rock ‘N Roll).

After a recap package brought everyone back up to speed from Monday’s performance episode, it was time for the most anticipated moment of the evening (next to actually learning who would be leaving). Gavin Rossdale, the former lead singer of Bush (and the Idols’ mentor for Unplugged week) got on stage to perform an acoustic version of his new single “Love Remains The Same.” I have to say that he sounded amazing and the song is super awesome. I actually haven’t been able to stop listening to it since I left the Bassett on Tuesday (not even kidding). It’s one of those infectious and catchy songs. While Rossdale might be a solo artist now, he certainly hasn’t lost the ability to have his songs stick with everyone who listens to them. It was the same with songs like “Glycerine” and “Swallowed” when he was with Bush.
After another commercial break, the audience was told that Tom Jones would be the mentor for next week and that the theme would be ‘British Invasion’ week. Somehow the thought of Tom Jones giving Mookie a tutorial on music by Oasis is oddly appealing to me. Haha.

During the commercial break, the couches were set up.

On the top couch (from left to right): Earl, Mark, Drew, Theo

On the bottom couch (from left to right): Mookie, Amberly, Sebastian and Mitch.

This immediately raised my suspicions. If Mitch and Sebastian were sitting beside each other, this obviously meant that one was safe because they wouldn’t have two of the bottom three sitting beside each other.

I figured this probably meant that Mitch was safe and that the bottom three would be Mookie (because of poor Toronto voting), Sebastian (since they weren’t sitting beside each other) and either Earl or Mark from the top couch.

I was dead on.

Ben announced that Mark, Sebastian and Mookie were in the bottom.

While I was a little surprised at the time, in hindsight… the voting results make sense. There was little doubt that the Ontario votes would be split between Drew, Sebastian and Mookie. The only real shocking thing was Mark Day being in the bottom so early. Newfoundland is known for being a voting powerhouse, but perhaps Day hasn’t won them over like Rex Goudie did before him.

Anyway, at this point the writing was on the wall and Ben announced what everybody expected. Sebastian was done.

How do I feel about it? Well, I have already said that I thought Sebastian should have gone home last week but I actually thought his performance was fantastic this week and he certainly did not deserve to leave, especially over Mitch.

I’ll see you next week when Idol and Murtz go British.
