Foley Says “Good Chance” He Won’t Re-Sign with WWE

News, Top Story

According to the Long Island Press, Mick Foley says “there is a good chance” he will not be renewing his contract with WWE once it expires on September 1 due to the announcing gig on Smackdown not suiting him best creatively.

Foley was last seen last week on SD getting beaten down by Edge following an excellent interview segment to end the show. To sell the beating, ECW color commentator Tazz filled in for Foley at Tuesday’s Smackdown taping of the show that airs tonight, with Raw wrestler Matt Striker sitting in for Tazz at the ECW announcer table.

With three weeks left on his contract, if Foley does indeed choose to let the contract expire without re-signing, WWE can decide to bring him back and write him off the show another way, or just move on. Of course, this is WWE, so “never say never.”

The Press story comes following Internet rumors that Foley wasn’t happy being yelled at constantly by Vince McMahon through his headset while announcing. This is par for the course for announcers, and probably different treatment than Foley was used to as strictly a performer. According to Prowrestling.net‘s Jason Powell, McMahon was pretty rough on Foley a while back when Foley was still teaming up with Michael Cole, and Foley called his boss later that night to discuss the situation. Even though McMahon’s supposedly toned things down, Foley was still uncomfortable and the ball was left in his court as whether or not to re-up with the company. Powell also says that Foley is expected at SummerSlam (August 17) in some role, but after that is up in the air.
