Murtzcellanious: LIVE Canadian Idol Recap – August 12

After another entertaining evening of performances, it was time for the Canadian Idol results on Tuesday.

The start of the show was unlike any other results show that I have seen. There was a mosh pit that was set-up in front of the stage (presumably for Simple Plan who would be performing after mentoring the Idols last week).

The show started with a group performance from the Top 6. There was a particularly amusing moment when Amberly sang to some guy in the audience and held his hand. He looked totally uncomfortable and I obviously couldn’t stop laughing!

Host Ben Mulroney came out and said that 3.3 million votes were cast on Monday and then introduced a recap of Monday’s performances. While I was expecting the usual run-through of which songs the contestants sang, I was totally shocked to see that the recap was done as a Sportscentre recap, complete with the hosts and everything. The funniest part about it was when they highlighted the TSN turning point which was a slow-motion playback of Theo kicking away his piano bench. I thought it was hysterical and this was probably my favorite Idol moment this year. Very creative!

After a commercial break, Simple Plan came out to perform their hit single “Your Love Is Just A Lie.” It was a little hard to see with everybody standing up, but from what I heard… it was an excellent performance.

In the next commercial break, the couches were set up.

Top couch (from left to right): Mookie, Mitch, Theo
Bottom couch (from left to right): Earl, Amberly, Drew

I wasn’t sure if they were going to do a bottom three this week, because if they did, it would give away the voting results of who the top three were.

Ben paused to talk to the judges for a second and the only relevant point here was when Sass said that she wanted M & M to be safe (Mitch and Mookie).

It was then time for the results.

MOOKIE (was called to the stage)
EARL (was told to stay on the couch)
AMBERLY (was told to stay on the couch)
THEO (was called to the stage)
DREW (was told to stay on the couch)
MITCH (was called to the stage)

Immediately, I knew what was up. I had seen this twist on American Idol before and it was very obvious to me that the people on the stage were safe and that the people on the couch were on the bottom.

I was right and Earl, Amberly and Drew were in the bottom three.

This was very interesting to me for a few reasons. First, it highlighted the fact that Mitch, Mookie and Theo were the top vote-getters (signaling that it didn’t even matter who would leave on Tuesday, because the other two were soon to follow). It also showed that Alberta was pinning its hopes on Theo (since Amberly and Earl were both in the bottom). Finally, it proved that the female vote was not supporting the last woman standing in Amnberly. When this season is over, this is definitely an episode that can be watched again and reanalyzed as it was pivotal.

Ben read the results and shockingly, Amberly was eliminated.

It’s the music of The Beatles on Monday!
