MLB Post-Trade Deadline Wrapup

Here are the post deadline trades. For a player to be traded after the deadline, they have to be placed on waivers (most call these waivers trade waivers since players can be pull back if they aren’t dealt). Most major league clubs will put a majority of their roster on trade waivers. The tradition guidelines for waiver order still apply. The players will remain on waivers for 2 days; the winning team will then attempt to work out a deal – any player that is deal must also clear waivers, unless they are not on the 40-man roster. A team may also allow a claim if they aren’t interested in getting anything back.

There is a precidence of blocking a player from a rival team; some times they can’t work out a deal and nothing happens. Occasionally the team that wins the claim will be given the player outright and are stuck with a player they didn’t really want.

Now, onto the trades…

The Royals trade Horacio Ramirez to the White Sox for Paulo Orlando – The Royals got some servicable innings from Ramirez and turned him for a speedy OF project. Orlando was a sprinter that the White Sox signed from Brazil; he’s extremely raw and needs to work on his batting eye. Ramirez can work out of the rotation (for the injured Jose Contreras) or the bullpen (for the struggling Boone Logan). The Royals had used him in relief and his command improved in that role.

The Orioles trade Chad Bradford to the Rays for a player to be named later – The Rays needed to stablize their bullpen and the O’s wanted Bradford off the books. He’s instantly one of the set up guys for the Rays playoff run. The Orioles get salary relief and a low level prospect.

The Reds trade Adam Dunn to the Diamondbacks for Dallas Buck and 2 players to be named later – Cincinnati felt that this deal would be worth more than 2 first round picks. Dunn slots into Eric Byrnes’s spot and will fit nicely in that line up. Buck was a former first rounder coming back from TJ surgery. It’s rumored that one of the players they’ll get is Micah Owings (it won’t be formally announced until after the season, Owings was claimed by a team with higher waiver priority).

The Indians trade Paul Byrd to the Red Sox for cash – This was a dump – the Indians weren’t going to get a draft pick for Byrd, so they went for some extra cash (approximately $2MM).

The Nationals trade Luis Ayala to the Mets for Anderson Hernandez – The Nats continue to deal away older players for marginal young ones. Ayala has struggled out of the pen, but the Mets hope he can find his old form. Hernandez was expected to play second for the Mets a few seasons ago, but couldn’t handle the full time job. The Nats have nothing to lose one him, so he’ll get a shot for a while.

The Padres trade Greg Maddux to the Dodgers for future consideration – Maddux would only go to a West Coast team and the Dodgers wanted insurance to keep Clayton Kershaw’s innings down. Plus, Maddux influence would be good for Kershaw and Billingsley. Padres Assistant GM Paul DePodesta said that they want players in the deal – they’ll evaluate some prospects in the coming weeks.

The Pirates trade Jose Bautista to the Blue Jays for a player to be named later – Bautista didn’t have a place with the Pirates after acquiring Andy LaRoche. They’ll end up with a marginal prospect. Bautista will probably be used off the bench by the Jays.

Some players still haven’t been placed on waivers – they can be at any time before the end of the season. Most will be on the waiver wire before the end of the month – which is also the cut off for being on a playoff roster. Brian Fuentes is one player who hasn’t been placed on waivers and is expected to be.
