Make Movement: Democratic Convention versus WWE RAW

Columns

I decided to DVR the Democratic National Convention and watch RAW in real time. Thinking about both productions, RAW didn’t put on a show that really could deter anyone away from watching the Convention. Granted, real news and a scripted show shouldn’t necessary compete since real news is more important than wrestling, but, thank goodness for DVR. For those of you who care about the political process and are not necessary a Democrat, Ted Kennedy was the Ric Flair of the first day of the convention, did his speech without a stool and gave it as much vocal power as anything he’s ever done. Michelle Obama gave more warmth and realism than anything I’ve ever heard her do and had her big moment that is much needed for her husband’s run for presidency and connected to the audience….she looked like the First Lady with her children that definitely channeled some Kennedy (not Mr. Kennedy) energy there.

The big news from RAW is Cena’s injury and Rey Mysterio, Jr. (a kid favorite for a kid favorite) as a replacement for the upcoming Unforgiven. Shawn Michaels in his emotional, calm before the storm plea to Chris Jericho to give him a unsanctioned match would be the second biggest story of the show. Now we need to step into “action” mode, they’ve given the promos, there is no need to keep giving long promos at this point. RAW had action last night (like a good match from JBL and CM Punk to open the show) but it has yet to lose the filler feeling that it’s had in recent weeks.

I’m glad to see Kane as a “no doubt about it” heel, though it was funny to see him setting up his own camera in the ‘boiler room/basement/whereever he was.’ Kane has always been one of the most unappreciated talents in the WWE over the last few years and it’s good to see him in a strong role on RAW. However, I thought his match with Batista at the end of the night was slow and boring.

When you see a clip of a great epic match between someone like Mr. Perfect and Bret Hart, and the energy of that crowd and the quality of that match….doesn’t it make you miss wrestling when it was allowed to be wresting and tell stories in the ring? Perfect and Hart are two of the best in the history of the industry and I wish more of today’s generation of superstars would watch those type of matches.

I feel sorry for Primo Colon, he has that same green, no one cares feeling that The Rock had when he started without the hype. I hope fans give him a chance but something feels off. Haas was funny at Charlito however and my sister had reminded me of when Bob Holly had a wig on before.

I hope RAW picks up some energy next week, it’ll be interesting to see how the ratings look.
