One Overriding Thought On AWA On ESPN for 8-29-08

How depressing.

From the fact that 90% of the arena being darkened, to their skeleton crew of a roster, to that pot bellied dwarf Jake Milliman running around celebrating the biggest win of his career; this was just an incredibly morose hour of wrestling I mostly fast fowarded through.

I mean, there was a small twinge of “Good for the pot bellied dwarf” for his big win, and some dark humor from imagining that they spent the last of the promotion’s money on that stupid oversized check, but mostly just soul crushing depression.

These guys used to be legitimate competition for the NWA and WWF? They could have had Hulk Hogan as a babyface champ in the ’80s and a show on NBC? Flair, Rhodes, Heenan, Bockwinkle, Hansen, Ventura, the Road Warriors, Hennig, and countless other legends worked there, and this was how they ended? A whimper and not a bang, indeed. Although, really, when your champ’s big move is the Stall of Doom and Baron Von Raschke, the kid friendly goose stepper is one of your top faces, you are really asking for it.

I really hope TNA doesn’t go down this road, although despite how awful everyone seems to think they are, they’re making a profit now, so they seem okay. Even WCW wasn’t this heart wrenchingly sad to watch be put down, although that was because of how surreal and exciting that whole thing was, what with Vince on Nitro and all. Vince wouldn’t have walked across the street to simulcast with this funeral service. So, hopefully now that that’s out of the way, they can get back to the good stuff, if the re-runs continue.
