BLATT vs ECW – September 2nd, 2008

DON’T QUESTION THE FIRE THAT BURNS INSIDE!

This show, like Monday night, is also in tribute to Killer Kowalski. I wonder if they actually think about these shows when they produce them with an “in memory” image before them.

We start the show with the Dirt Sheet. Morrison talks about how he’s better than Steven Hawking and Carl Sagan at Parcheesi. The Miz says he’ll be the ECW champion come Sunday. Man, this is a terrible segment. These two usually have some kind of chemistry, but not tonight. They call down Mark Henry and Tony Atlas. Sexual Chocolate and Tony come down and stand off a little bit. Morrison says they won’t even make fun of Henry’s belt extender. Next up is Chavo, whose music is replaced with Morrison and Miz singing an a cappella version with fart noises mixed in. Morrison and Miz talk Chavo and Bam down from angry. Miz calls Chavo a baby for crying about losing his title at Wrestlemania. Next up is Finlay, who isn’t here but instead we’ll hear from his brothers. It’s Miz and Morrison wearing green derby caps at a bar making fun of Finlay. Looks like Finlay’s actually here and isn’t too happy, despite being al smiles on his way to the ring. Hornswoggle kicks Miz in the shin. Morrison calls out Jeff… Matt Hardy. Finlay reminds Morrison that Hardy beat Morrison to qualify for the championship scramble.Hardy comes down to the ring with some huge crowd support. Hardy makes a gay joke about Atlas and Neely before making fun of Miz and Morrison. Mark Henry makes some tough talk and the segment descends into chaos. Here comes Tommy Dreamer and Evan Bourne too and it looks like we’ve set up a large tag match for later tonight. To and from commercials and backstage, everyone is still arguing, and Terry Taylor is there to break up the match. As I thought, tonight it’s gonna be an eight man tag match.

Super Crazy over Gavin Spears by springboard moonsault
Super Crazy? And Gavin Spears gets the video dating treatment, despite still looking like a jobber supreme. Crazy is an ECW original, so you know he’s not going to be winning. Crazy out wrestles and is quicker than Spears too. There’s nothing remarkable about this guy, down to his haircut, tattoo, knee pads, goatee and wrestling trunks. I don’t think we’ll be seeing too much of this guy, despite appearing like he’s going to be sticking around.

Ricky Ortiz over Brian Braddockby the Warrior splash
Really? Well, it’s like a sloppy joe sandwich without the joe or the sandwich. Neither guy is particularly god and I don’t particularly care. I’m shocked that this asshole wins with a running Warrior splash.

Matt Hardy, Tommy Dreamer, Evan Bourne and Finlay over Mark Henry, Chavo Guerrero, The Miz and John Morrison by Twist of Fate
It takes approximately eight minutes for everyone to make their entrances and the match finally gets underway. It’s clear that the creative team had nothing for ECW this week except a plan for this main event, but this happens once a month before the PPV. They forget that ECW has story lines and only push one match, leaving the rest for jobbing. I know that normally I detail one match on average per ECW show, but this show’s got nothing of interest. Hardy and Morrison start with Hardy getting in early control. Dreamer comes in throwing Morrison around and tags in Finlay. Finlay continues the punishment, but Morrison gets a tag into Chavo. The ref is distracted and the heels triple team Finlay. Finlay comes back with two clotheslines Chavo and we head to commercial.

We come back from a particularly long commercial break we come back and Finlay still has control of Chavo. Bourne’s finally tagged in and goes to work on Chavo. Miz is tagged in and gets moonsaulted by Bourne for a two. TWO!

As most 8 man tags go, we all know that they don’t really catch on until much later in the match. We go back and forth and Bourne plays the fae in peril for quite a while. Next up is Dreamer who will take punishment from the heels until someone else can get tagged in. That someone is Matt HArdy, who gets an advantage on Chavo. This lasts until Mark Henry is tagged in. Henry misses a splash and here comes Evan Bourne to hit his pretty shooting star spress. Next Tommy Dreamer hits a splash and then Finlay. Matt Hardy clocks Tony Atlas and hits the Twist of Fate to call it a night.

Overall impression on the show is that you can safely skip it. Full of the same stuff we saw on RAW yesterday with the battle royal and jobbers galore.
