90210 – Episodes 1-1 & 1-2 Review

Well here are 6 words that I never thought would come out of my mouth: THIS IS BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL. The show has a similar premise from the original one, though, where a mid-western family moves from the mid-west to Beverly Hills. Except this time the Patriarch Harry Wilson didn’t get a promotion he gets a job as the Principal of West Beverly High. As expected we see some new faces (the new cast) and some old faces (Brenda Walsh, Kelly Taylor, Nat Bu- I can’t spell his last name) though the new 90210 is without David, Donna, Dylan, Brandon, Steve and Andrea. However, we do see Andrea’s daughter Hannah Zuckerman-Vasquez and surprisingly she’s following in her mother’s footsteps except this time the Blaze is no longer a high school paper it’s a newscast.

Kelly Taylor is now a guidance counsellor at West Beverly High and is now a single mom (who’s the father?) There are some references though to current world stories like saying that students know more about media than they do about Geography demonstrated the fact by asking who “McLovin” is from Superbad. There is alot of change as well. The inside has definitely changed and so has the Peach Pit. It no longer looks like a diner it looks more like a coffee house as I saw Nat struggle with a coffee maker. It also has a patio now which is pretty much my favourite scene of the whole episode because Brenda and Kelly are reunited after not seeing each other for four years. Here’s what Brenda said to Nat about Brandon who was in Belize “Every time he thinks about you he craves a mega burger”.

Annie Wilson manages to make friends with Erin Silver (she just goes by the name Silver) who we could say is the Gossip Girl of West Bev High since she has a blog where she is contstantly dissing Naomi in the blog. I can see why they used to be friends. They have the same friendship tatto on their backside (I guess tattoing your lover’s name isn’t the only regrettable permanent inking). Annie gets along with Naomi at first even inviting her to her “not-so-sweet-16” but then a rat-on about Naomi’s “Tale of Two Cities” paper cancels the invite. However Annie and Silver make like Silver’s older brother and the late Scott Scanlon and “crash the party!”

Dixon tries out for the lacrosse team but is clashing with George who seems to be a drug dealer as we learn in the beginning of the episode. This causes Dixon to get kicked off the team before the season even begins. However he is brought back on after the character Ethan puts in a good word after being confronted by Annie. An opposing school trashes (literally) the hallways of West Bev high and though the boys are told “No return fire”, they do just that by releasing pigs into the field of that opposing school, which happens to be something Dixon learns from “Principal Daddy”. I look forward to seeing what happens next in the season as a family bowling game could bring some stuff out. And wondering if there will be any more repeats of the original? This pilot had more drama than the original 90210 pilot did. Let’s hope that Dixon Wilson has better luck with girls than Brandon Walsh did.
