10 Thoughts On ECW – 09/02/08

Reviews, Shows, TV Shows

01. The Dirt Sheet was a true mix of garbage and laughs. Luckily it played into the characters of Miz and Morrison because otherwise it wouldn’t have worked at all. The Finlay segment was painful to watch (reminded me of something I might watch on The Real World) while the Chavo Guerrero entrance was hilarious.

02. Matt Hardy can’t work the microphone. Period. He used to have it. Then he went and lost it inside Lita’s vagina and Edge found it and kept it for himself.

03. Mark Henry is awesome. Guy has totally upped his game and there is a genuine feeling of intimidation behind him. I still think Henry should retain the belt over Hardy and that Bourne should be the one to dethrone Henry. We’ll see how it goes.

04. Gavin Spears is going to be released sooner rather than later. Apparently they’re working a losing heel gimmick for him but when has that ever worked for anyone?

05. Ricky Ortiz reminds me of a young Batista. Sure he isn’t the greatest of workers right now, but there is a lot of potential to create a genuinely entertaining, if not downright empathetic character for audiences to get behind down the line.

06. Hardy’s wrestling impressed me a bit more this week than he did last week. He looked ready to go and showed just as much.

07. Evan Bourne is a god. He totally makes the ECW show worth watching all by himself, the way Punk did when he was on the show. His shooting star press on Henry was such a thing of beauty that it’s still ingrained in my mind. It’s going to make an epic GIF for someone out there.

08. Mark Henry is a goddamn beast. His run-in to club the hell out of Tommy Dreamer was great and the way he greatly sold the Twist of Fate was awesome to watch for a man of his size.

09. The crowd went apeshit for the finish of the match, which is a testament to how strong Henry was established throughout the night and how much of a big deal it was for Henry to be pinned. It’s still extremely rare for people to get into the ECW show, as proven by the lack of heat for the previous two matches before the main event. However this match and the brilliantly booked finishing sequence had the arena coming up to its feet which made for quite an awesome sight.

10. The main event was easily the best, most exciting PPV calibur match I’ve seen on free TV in some time. I totally recommend everyone go online and find a copy of the show just for this match.
