ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting even though Shawne Merriman was going to try and play the season with two torn ligaments in his left knee; he couldn’t get past the first game and is going on Injured Reserve.
Merriman had a choice to forgo reconstructive surgery before the season started and was willing to risk permanent knee damage to play the season. Mortensen has said that it was a mutual thing between him and the Chargers that he needs the surgery and will be out for the season.
