How I Met Your Mother – Episode 4-1 Review

I’ll pay homage to the great NFL writer Peter King here, by doing these posts Monday Morning Quarterback style!! So, here goes. Hopefully this can be as good as the episode today.

It May Only be Week One, but It’s Always Good to Start Out Strong

At the end of last season the show was left with its first true cliff-hanger ending, other than the inside the word “Legen-Wait-For-It” ending two years ago, and as promised we learned the result of the cliffhanger really soon. The show did the proposal answer great, as Sarah Chalke played the scene brilliantly, especially the laugh-out-loud no. I also liked the opening montage after the credits, with the updates of the cast, and the hilarious “What are you doing?: comments from the Marshmallow.

With the longing glance given at the end of last year from Barney, we all knew that love was certainly in the air. The dialogue between Lily and Barney was great. I loved how Lily, the most romantic female on the show, played a central role in the whole thing. Also, one of the best comedic moments was when the “bimbo” came out of the bathroom. That was classic Barney. Needless to say, he may be smitten, but the Barnacle is still Awesome!!

The other main storyline, and probably the most interesting B storyline in the show’s history, was the “Star Wars Test.” There is no way Luke and Leia’s mother cannot know the meaning of her children’s names. That is one of the many reasons why I still do not believe that she is the mother, but having Dr. Reid on the show is nice. It really was a great episode, even down to the bit parts, like Robin’s “Boogeyman with a teleprompter” bits and Lily’s laugh-out-loud “Robin’s sweet and nice, and I won’t lie I have noticed her body, but that’s not important.” Great start to hopefully a great season.

Joke of the Week

“Come on Ted, I’m losing wood over here”

– Stella to Ted, when Ted was not giving in to her moves during Star Wars

Joke of the Week Runner Up

“So choose. Bimbos or Robin” – Lily

“I choose Bimbos” – cue Barney rant (Just brilliant timing)

Aggravating/Enjoyable Alyson Hannigan Fashion Note of the Week

Seemingly every year comes a new hairstyle with Lily Aldrin. At first it was the long awaited change back to Hannigan natural brown color in season two. Last year it was the change to her natural bangs, and by natural I mean natural if she were a cow. This year it is a return to the hotness that was Lilypad in season two. She also has some meat on her now, which is much appreciated by the people who thought she may have lost too much weight after going all vegan for a while there at the end of season three. It’s glad to see her in her great beauty again.

10 Things I Think I Think

  1. I think this was far and away the best season premiere that the show has had. The season two premiere was pretty bad, in my opinion. It was probably the worst episode of the season, although considering my taste, it is hard to see any episode in which Lily is shown for all of three seconds as good. This years was great. Good lines, edgy and resolved the issues of last year and opened new ones as well.
  2. I think Marshall’s hair is awful, but his performance, even in a limited role, was great. Loved his hide behind the couch snide remarks, and the “I really do need to get a job” bit.
  3. I think this show came back edgier and more direct. Gone are the days where “Master of your domain” was a necessary psuedonym for masturbation I guess. Also period and “wood” humor in the episode too. Maybe turning blue will get the Emmy’s attention?
  4. “And why do the hang around with that Bear?” I Think that may be the greatest wookie joke uttered by a female doctor moonlighting as another doctor ever.
  5. I think I totally see where Marshall is coming from. If you are a person who loves a movie that much, that you could watch it on friggin’ Christmas Eve, angering the almighty Santa at that, and your wife-to-be cannot stand it. Well that is a dealbreaker for me. Maybe that’s why I’m not married. Not to many girls out there lining up to see Anchorman are there?? If you would, and you do not have “wood” call me!
  6. I think that Robin’s ignorance towards Barney’s love may a permanent thing. She seemed totally oblivious, and even last year, she seemed adverse to the thought of even considering a future with Barney apart from the one night stand. To Robin, it was a mistake. I think that this season may accompany Barney pining, but Robin not at all giving back.
  7. I think I want more of Barney’s apartment. It was great back in season two, especially the porn hallway, and it was great her too, 300 inch TV and all. That reminds me, there’s another reason I may never get married: Ladies do you like 300 inch TV’s??
  8. I think that Robin will definitely join Marshall on the unemployed list soon. She really hates Metro News One. I would too if they gave me ouns in the teleprompter. The “tooth” instead of the “truth.” Now THATS Comedy!
  9. I think that Marhsall and Lily are going to get divorced.
  10. Just kidding!! I think I can’t see Stella and Ted ending well. This show is going to go past this season, mark my words. She is not going to be the mother. It may just be a hunch, but my past hunches have included the Giants winning the super bowl, so I’m pretty good with them. They are just too different. The show gave us similar clues about Robin and Ted all throughout season two as well.

Who I Like Next Week, and I Mean Alyson Hannigan

Regis Philbin + 10,000,000. My prediction, the Philbin-ster nets How I Met Your Mother ten million. I really can’t wait. Regis joining the gang to find the world’s greatest burger sounds like the perfect crazy idea for these guys.

Daniel Menezes is a lifelong How I Met Your Mother viewer and fan. He started watching it right of the bat due to his love of all things Alyson Hannigan, and has grown to consider it the best true sitcom on TV today. It is a treat for him to be able to blog on all things How I Met Your Mother. Please enjoy, and comment!!
