South Park: The Cult Of Cartman – Revelations DVD Review

DVD Reviews, Reviews, Top Story

Eric Cartman: easily one of the most evil animated characters ever. Eric Cartman: one of the four main characters of South Park. Eric Cartman: “a fat, racist, self-center, intolerant, manipulating sociopath.” Whether you hate to love him or love to hate him, Eric Cartman is certainly one of the most unique characters in animate history and this collection pays tribute to the lessons learned and taught by him.

While this isn’t the The Hits: Volume 2 that most people were expecting, this Cartman-focused collection is a very solid release for those who don’t plan on owning every season of South Park. This collection contains twelve episodes–two from season 5, 8, 9 and 10, one from 11 and three from the so far unreleased season 12. And like the recently released season 11, all the episodes included here are also uncensored.

Whether he’s planning the ultimate revenge, playing a trick on Butters, pretending he has Tourette’s Syndrome, teaching inner city high school kids how to cheat through life, leading a ginger uprising or giving his friends AIDS, Cartman is always looking out for himself. He is truly one of the most diabolical characters ever created and like a train wreck you can’t look away, even if you wanted to. You have to know what new machinations are brewing in his twisted mind.

This is a very solid collection and if you like South Park, but don’t like it enough to own every single season, then this is certainly a must own. It’s a shame that two of these twelve episodes appear on the The Hits: Volume 1, but this is the first time most of these episodes have appeared uncensored. At the very least if you already own these episodes you’ve certainly never heard them like this.

Episodes:

Disc 1:

Scott Tenorman Must Die – 6/11/2001

In easily his greatest and most malicious moment (so much so that it is referenced in two other episodes in this collection) Cartman plans the ultimate revenge against ninth grader, Scott Tenorman when Scott tricks Cartman into buying his pubic hair for ten dollars. This episode features a cameo by Radiohead.

AWESOM-O – 4/14/2004

When Cartman attempts to play a trick on Butters by pretending to be a robot from Japan, the joke is on him. It turns out Butters has video footage of Cartman dressed as Britney Spears singing in his backyard and he’ll show it to everyone if Cartman plays another prank on him. So Cartman must stay in character as AWESOM-O even as Hollywood producers are coming on to him and military leaders want to destroy him.

The Death Of Eric Cartman – 4/13/2005

Cartman finally goes too far when he eats all the skin off the KFC. As punishment the guys decide to ignore him. Cartman immediately thinks that he has died. When he discovers that Butters is the only one who can “see” him, he uses him to make amends with those he has wronged. Seeming to have actually learned a lesson for once, Cartman does everything he can to insure that he’ll get into heaven. But when he stops a hostage situation he learns the joke is on him.

Cartoon Wars, Part I – 4/5/2006

When the United States gets in an uproar over Family Guy showing an image of Muhammad, Cartman sees it as an opportunity to get the show he hates taken off the air for good.

Cartoon Wars, Part II – 4/12/2006

When Kyle realizes what Cartman is up to, he realizes he is the only one who can stop him from getting Family Guy pulled for good. Also, the mystery behind who the writers of Family Guy is finally revealed. This episode also features a cameo appearance by a South Park version of Bart Simpson!

Le Petit Tourette – 10/3/2007

When Cartman learns about Tourette’s Syndrome, he convinces everyone, but Kyle that is, that he has it so he can say whatever he wants. He then gets Dateline to do a piece on him so he can cuss on national television. But things go wrong when he starts uncontrollably blurting out embarrassing secrets about himself.

Disc 2:

Tonsil Trouble – 3/12/2008

When Cartman gets his tonsils removed he is accidentally infected with the HIV virus. Kyle finds this so ironic that he can’t help but laugh uncontrollably when Cartman is around. Fed up with Kyle’s reaction, Cartman injects his blood into Kyle to infect him. Kyle is so furious with Cartman that he threatens to break everything Cartman owns. Before Kyle can break Cartman’s XBox, he tells Kyle that he thinks he has a lead to a cure. This lead takes them to Magic Johnson and the secret behind how he has stayed so health all these years.

Eek, A Penis! – 3/9/2008

Mrs. Garrison realizes that she should have been a man all along. When she hears about scientists that have grown a human ear on a mouse, she goes to them in hopes that they can grow a penis on a mouse. This experiment is a success, however the mouse escapes and Garrison’s penis is on the loose. Meanwhile, Cartman is put in charge of the class and they get the best grades ever. Because of this he is sent to Denver to teach some inner city kids. Taking on the guise of Edward James Olmos’ character from Stand And Deliver, Cartman teaches the kids his secret to success: cheating.

Cartmanland – 7/25/2001

When Cartman inherits a fortune from his dead grandmother he buys himself an amusement park so he can enjoy it all by himself. However when he needs to pay a security guard to keep Stan and Kyle out he has to start letting guests in. Meanwhile Kyle has developed a hemorrhoid that seems to only get worse as Cartman’s fortunes improve.

Up The Down Steroid – 3/24/2004

Jimmy and Timmy are set to participate in the Special Olympics. Intimidated by the competition, Jimmy starts taking steroids. Meanwhile, Cartman pretends to be special in order participate in the Special Olympics thinking he’ll win without a problem and collect the $1000 grand prize.

Super Fun Time – 4/23/2008

The class goes on a field trip to a Pioneer Village. Cartman and Butters are forced to be partners and Mr. Garrison tells Butters he’d better not let go of Cartman’s hand no matter what. Cartman learns that there is a Super Phun Thyme arcade park across the street and decides that would be more fun that the stupid Village. Butters, refusing to let go of Cartman’s hand reluctantly goes with him. While the two are away a group of high tech thieves that just robbed a Burger King take the village hostage. The Village is surrounded by police. Thinking the police are looking for them, Cartman and Butters find a way to sneak back into the village.

Ginger Kids – 11/9/2005

After Cartman gives a class presentation on how gingers (kids with red hair, pale skin and freckles) are evil, the guys decide to teach him a lesson. While Cartman sleeps they make him look like a ginger. At first freaked out by the transformation, Cartman is soon fed up by the intolerance from the other kids and leads an army of gingers to kill all the non-gingers in town.

The show is presented in fullscreen 1:33.1 and English Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo. This show looks and sounds great and the transfer is fantastic.

Exclusive Animation: Cartman introduces each episode by informing the audience what the lesson of the episode is. While these are cute I’d hardly call them a special feature. And that’s all you get in this collection. There is nothing else, not even the mini commentaries that accompany the other South Park releases. I guess Matt Stone and Trey Parker have said enough about the older episodes and are waiting until the season 12 DVD to talk about the new ones.

Also included is an Official Member card for The Eric Theodore Cartman Society that expires in 2012 “along with the rest of civilization.” As well as a sweet Cartman Sticker.

If you’re a South Park completeist and own every season there is really no point in buying this. You can probably hold out until season 12 is released to get the three new episodes. But if you’re South Park DVD collection consists of The Hits: Volume 1, this is easily a must buy. These are all great episodes and worthy of owing in one capacity or another.
