Smallville – Episode 8-4 Review

I’d hate to needlessly criticize Kristin Kreuk, because I think she’s amazingly beautiful and a phenomenal actress (extremely overrated), but man, the show just has a completely new energy and feel now that her character has been written off. And that, my friends, is a good thing.

I’m actually not going to say much about the whole Maxima thing, because I honestly feel like the side stories were much more interesting.

Like I said last week, I just love the Clark and Lois relationship and how it’s beginning to mold into the legendary couple we’re all familiar with. I love Clark wearing a suit. I love Lois’ confidence and bossy nature. I think the show has finally nailed the Clark and Lois relationship. The important thing, though, is for them not to pull back when it’s time for them to get together.

I especially liked their interaction during the Maxima make out scene. I thought it was great how upset and jealous Lois got, but continuously denied it to herself. I also appreciated how Maxima noted that Clark wouldn’t have been able to resist her if he didn’t have feelings for Lois. I enjoy the slow build for this relationship, but I do wish they had started earlier (like last year).

By the way, for a moment I did believe they were going to have Lois and Clark live together, which would have been interesting (not necessarily in a good or bad way, in particular). And is it me, or is Clark awfully unconcerned about the whereabouts of his cousin? Sure, I assume that he doesn’t know that she’s in the Phantom Zone, but he must know that she’s SOMEWHERE unpleasant (after all, the villainous Brainiac is responsible for her disappearance). Since the beginning of the season, he’s mentioned being alone and lonely countless times, yet he hasn’t once said, “Gee, I wonder where my cousin is. I hope she’s safe….” Not once.

Although last week was a homerun for the Tess character, she’s still treading in the “stereotypical villain” territory. And I’ll ask again: Why exactly is she living in the Luthor mansion? Isn’t that a bit unusual? Like, imagine if a company CEO went missing and his replacement just started shacking up in his home. That wouldn’t strike anybody as odd?

I’m not sure where this whole Chloe/Jimmy thing is going. It seems like the only time any significant time is devoted to this relationship, it’s to tease a break up of some sort. We’re a few episodes into this season, and Chloe has spent most of her time with Doomsday. This leads me to believe that they won’t end up getting married. And if they do, it won’t last long.

I thought the heart to heart between Chloe and Clark was extremely sweet. I really enjoyed how maturely Chloe handled the situation. Although I didn’t quite get Clark’s, “I didn’t even know she felt that way” comment later on. He’s known since, like, season three or four. That was four years ago! I think it’s nice that he’s going to walk Chloe down the aisle (I thought we were going to have a Maid of Honor situation there), but isn’t her father still alive?

Speaking of Chloe and Jimmy, when the future groom said, “you never forget your one true love,” I thought, “Oh, great, not another excuse for Clark to bring up Lana.” But, in hindsight, I think the scene did a nice job of establishing that even though Clark is so torn up about Lana leaving, it doesn’t necessarily mean that she’s the love of his life. Quite simply, it’s just really, really hard to let go of the first person to own your heart. Despite the fact that Chloe hasn’t had feelings for Clark in a few years (and I do believe that she hasn’t), she still keeps an old letter that tells him how she feels.

That being said, the show really needs to give up on that whole Clark/Lana thing. I mean, the actress isn’t even on the show anymore. And your audience really turned on it. It’s time to let it go.
