NFL Considering Spring Game

News

Some time in the future, you could be watching a National Football League game in the spring.

It’s only a thought at this point, but commissioner Roger Goodell said the idea of a spring game or scrimmage was discussed before team owners wrapped up a two-day meeting.

“It was interesting,” Goodell said. “It was raised by a few clubs, more in the context of what the colleges do with the spring game. It could be in the form of the scrimmage, too. It was just an interesting concept. It’s been raised before.”

Goodell said no parameters have been set and the idea will get consideration in the future. He said the idea could include a spring preseason game or games, a scrimmage between two teams or an intra-squad scrimmage.

Any movement toward a spring game or scrimmage probably would come in conjunction with an adjustment of the league’s preseason and regular-season schedule. Goodell said owners spent more than 45 minutes Wednesday morning discussing the possibility of adding a 17th or 18th regular-season game.

That scenario has been discussed in the past and has included talk of reducing the number of preseason games. Currently, teams play either four or five preseason games, and there has been public criticism about the quality of play and starters sitting out exhibition games.

Goodell said the league isn’t ready to vote on adding a 17th or 18th game, but the issue will continue to be analyzed and discussed in the future.
