Adult industry juggernaut Playboy has decided to stop selling DVDs. With the rise of the Internet and massive storage on new computers, Playboy will now selling the material online only. Video Business reported that Playboy Chairman and CEO Christie Hefner sent a message to staff members last week saying that the move is part of an effort to cut expenses by $10 million in hopes of returning to profitability in 2009. In addition the company plans to lay off 80 employees and consolidate office space at its Los Angeles headquarters.
This leads me to a couple questions. Is this the start of the sole Digital Movie era? We know that digital is going to take over for DVD in the future, but is that time now? How does Playboy lose money? Honestly? It’s not right. Why are we bailing out banks and greedy Wall Street guys when an American icon like Playboy is losing money?
