X-Files Writer Talks Third Film

News, Rumors

Will Sculley and Mulder search for out of this world life again?

The big question X-Files fans are asking right now is “will there be another X-Files movie?” and “will it wrap up the whole mythology arc?” The Sci-Fi Movie Page asked this of writer / producer / Frank Spotnitz in an exclusive interview with the X-Files honcho. The answers are “don’t know” and “would want to, yes”.

Spotnitz says that even though he is working on some very hush-hush TV projects right now, that he would welcome a third big screen X-Files movie. However 20th Century Fox hasn’t gotten back to them on that score yet. The producer is the first one to be upfront about the “disappointing” box office of this summer’s X-Files: I Want to Believe. “We opened a week after The Dark Knight and got mowed down by it,” he says. “No one knew what a huge historical event it would be.”

There is still hope for X-Philes though. The movie did “far better overseas” and they will see how well the DVD release of X-Files: I Want to Believe does. (It will be released in the States on 2 December 2008).

Spotnitz says he “welcomes” the opportunity of making another movie with Mulder and Scully. “As you know the date of December 2012 is an important one in The X-Files, and I’d like to focus on that.”

Does that mean that The X-Files 3will be going one-on-one against Roland Emmerich’s 2012 movie? Even Michael Bay has been rumored to have a 2012: War for Souls project based on a Whitley Strieber book in the works at one point. (Some background: the ancient Mayan calendar runs out in December 2012. Some New Agers see this as a sign of the impending apocalypse.) Not in the least, Spotnitz says. “They won’t be directly in competition as they are very different genres.”

“We will just have to wait and see,” Spotnitz told the Sci-Fi Movie Page.
