Paul Williams Drops Welterweight Belt

News

Paul Williams is once again the former WBO Welterweight champion. Williams decided to relinquish the welterweight title after the WBO would not allow Williams to simultaneously hold the welterweight title and challenge for the WBO light middleweight title, something Williams is slated to do on Nov. 29th against Verno Phillips. Williams won the WBO welterweight title from Antonio Margarito then lost it to Carlos Quintana before regaining the title in a rematch with Quintana.

Dan Goosen, Williams’ promoter, says he could not find anyone that would fight Williams for the 147-pound welterweight title. That’s obviously false, but it would be interesting to know what pool of fighters Goosen was willing to select opponents from. Williams believes he can fight anywhere between the welterweight limit of 147 and the super middleweight limit of 168. That’s a bad idea for most fighters but Paul Williams is somehow able to carry 147 effectively on his lanky 6’1″ frame.
