Eartha Kitt passes away at age 81

News

Eartha Kitt was the real cat’s meow. The famed actress, singer and dancer passed away early this morning. For this self-proclaimed “sex kitten” her career spanned six decades, beginning with her stint as a dancer as part of the famed Katherine Dunham troupe. During the 1960s she was a bit of a rebel when she denounced the Vietnam War.

But she knew how to light up a room; Orson Welles once dubbed her the “most exciting woman in the world”.

Just last week I was dining with a film critic who recounted a story of getting into a drinking contest with Kitt many years ago. Big mistake. This “Santa Baby” proved to be a formidable adversary, ultimately winning out. The critic had to have help getting up, his legs all wobbly-like.

For many, Eartha Kitt will best be remembered for her role on TV’s “Batman,” the camp classic that starred Adam West. Kitt replaced Julie Newmar as Catwoman for the 1967-1968 season. With her pitch-perfect catlike purr , Newmar could have been an afterthought. She was simply purrfect.

The staff of Popcorn Junkies would like to extend its thoughts and prayers towards the Kitt family.
