Jackie Chan waxes off in new role.

Disc Announcements, News

If you got that not so subtle reference than you can probably guess what this is all about.

That’s right! Jackie Chan is in negotiations to star in Columbia’s remake of The Karate Kid playing the wise mentor, Mr. Miyagi, who was originally played by Pat Morita.

The studio has also signed Harald Zwart to direct the film which should begin shooting this year in Beijing as the film is being relocated to China.

Jaden Smith, son of Will Smith, who has appeared in The Pursuit of Happyness and The Day the Earth Stood Still is set to star as the boy to be mentored by Chan’s Miyagi.

While Smith is certainly no Ralph Macchio, the film will be like the original in that it will examine the relationship between the martial arts expert and a they young boy who is picked on by bullies.

It will come as no surprise that Will Smith’s production company, Overbrook Entertainment will be producing the film along with the original film’s producer Jerry Weintraub. Chris Murphy has been attached to write the script.
