More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks – TV MC

Columns, Top Story

By now, everyone should be familiar with Skillz. He’s an emcee extraordinaire who’s ghostwritten for the best. Well, obviously not “the best,” but you know what I mean. You might also know him from his annual “Rap-Ups,” which are usually one of my favorite songs of the year.

Anyway, recently Skillz ventured into the realm of TV recapping when he released his “Rap-Up” for The Wire, which in case you didn’t know, is as close to a masterpiece as television is ever going to get.

Skillz knocked it out of the park, and I say that as both a fan of rhyming and a fan of the show. But that got me thinking; what other shows would I like to see Skillz recap?

Lost
I’d like to see Skillz tackle this show for a myriad of reasons. Firstly, because I think it’d be a challenge. Secondly, I’m curious as to if it could actually be done. Thirdly, I’d like to see how the show’s rabid fanboys would react when the brutally honest Skillz puts the various creative dead-ends the writers have employed on blast. Still, with a story as convoluted as Lost‘s maybe this isn’t such a good idea after all.

The Shield
I think that this show would be a really good candidate for the treatment. It’s only seven seasons long and it’s got some dynamic characters. It’s also got some gully storylines, which I’d like see Skillz dramatize. I think that if he did The Shield, it’d probably be as good as the Wire edition.

Six Feet Under
I liked this show. I really liked this show. And being that it’s a family drama, I’d be really curious to see if Skillz could make this one work. But I really just want it to happen to relive those seasons again.

Deadwood
I’m all about Deadwood at this very moment. I can’t get enough of it. I’m currently working my way though the entire series on DVD, with commentary, behind-the-scenes stuff and all. As such, I’d be interested in hearing how Skillz handled a show set in the past. I’m sure he’d have fun with it, as the series did have some very humorous moments.

I mean, I know that I’m probably dreaming, but still, if Wale can grab publicity for a Seinfield inspired mixtape, I’ve got to imagine that Skillz could do the same if he did a mixtape peppered with recaps.

It’s tough being a dreamer.
