ABC greenlit a slew of pilots on Wednesday, including the Courteney Cox-Bill Lawrence project Cougar Town, a project starring Kelsey Grammer and one from Cedric the Entertainer.
Four other comedies, including a remake of the British show No Heroics, also have earned pilot orders over the last couple days, the showbiz trade papers report.
Here’s a rundown:
Cougar Town stars Cox as a 40ish woman with a teenage son who finds herself single and dating again. The show grew out of Cox’s guest stint on Scrubs earlier this season. Lawrence wrote the pilot with fellow Scrubs scribe Kevin Biegel.
Cedric’s show is called The Law and centers on a group of reserve police officers in Los Angeles, who have regular jobs and lives during the week but put on a badge on weekends. Bob Fisher (Wedding Crashers) and Cedric collaborated on the script and will exec produce with Charles Segars, Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank.
Grammer will star as a Wall Street executive who loses his job and has to reconnect with his family. Everybody Loves Raymond veteran Tucker Cawley is the creator.
No Heroics is an adaptation of an ITV2 sitcom about off-duty superheroes who gather at a heroes-only bar to commiserate about their lack of fame and glory. Jeff Greenstein (Will & Grace) and original creator Drew Pearce are writing the script.
Canned is about a group of friends who all get fired from their jobs at the same time. It comes from writer Kevin Etten (Reaper, Ed).
Comedian Anita Renfroe will star in a presentation as a mom who lives by the idea that family comes first, no matter what. Rob Hanning and Amy Welsh (Courting Alex) are writing.
Finally, ABC has ordered Planet Lucy, about a woman who gave up her job to raise her three kids and now leads the a harried life as a stay-at-home mom. It’s based on the novel Slummy Mummy by Fiona Neill; Gabrielle Allan (Scrubs) wrote the pilot.
