Angel's Rookie Adenhart Dies in Car Crash

Los Angeles Angels rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart died Thursday in a hit-and-run car crash after a game, a hospital official said.

Adenhart, 22, died after undergoing surgery, University of California, Irvine Medical Center spokesman John Murray said.

Adenhart was one of three people killed in the crash early Thursday after pitching in a loss against the Oakland Athletics.

The driver of a minivan ran a red light in Fullerton and hit two cars, including one carrying Adenhart.

Police Lt. Craig Brower said the minivan driver fled the crash scene and was captured a short time later. The driver was arrested and booked for investigation of felony hit-and-run.

A fourth passenger was at the same hospital in critical condition.

Adenhart was the Angels’ No. 3 starter, making his season debut Wednesday night. The right-hander earned a spot in the starting rotation on an injury-plagued Angels staff by impressing manager Mike Scioscia late in spring training.

He was born in Silver Springs, Md.

The thoughts and prayers of the Tailgate Crashers staff goes out to Nick’s family and friends. More on this story as we hear anything.

UPDATE: Andrew Gallo, the driver of the minivan, has been charged with 3 counts of murder, driving under the influence, a third charge that sounds a lot like driving under the influence that will probably get dropped, and leaving the scene of an accident where deaths occured. If convicted on all charges Gallo would be looking at up to 55 years. Personally, that’s bull. If I go off and just kill three people with a machette, I’m getting life, but just because he used a car he gets at most 55 years?
