Pulse Wrestling’s Real-Time Smackdown Report 04/17/2009

Reviews, Shows, Top Story, TV Shows

It is Friday night and time for the newly reshuffled, revised, really confusing first Smackdown since the WWE Draft. Follow along for two full hours of action as we attempt to find out who will be stand out, who will be shut out, so grab a drink, your chair, and away we go…

THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING!

Smackdown is brought to us from the University of Tennessee on MyNetworkTV with ringside announcers Jim Ross and Todd Grisham.

Jeff Hardy vs. Big Show

If Jeff can run fast enough, he may survive against Big Show. The audience is all pro Hardy and we can only hope Hardy survives being stepped on by Show. Big Show goes for a cover for two. Jeff’s chest and back are red from the beating he is taking at the hands of the big man, Show throws Hardy through the ropes, to the floor and we go to commercial break.

Back to the ring, Jeff is still being abused by Big Show but JR and Todd tell us what a great match it has been as Show covers and gets two. Big Show misses a leap off the second rope, Jeff comes back, Matt Hardy appears at ringside and Jeff goes over the top rope, stepping on Show as he goes, to take out Matt. Jeff gets back in the ring and Big Show covers for the three.

Winner: Big Show via pinfall.

I have no idea why we saw this match even as an opener. After Show exits the ring, Matt comes in to slap Jeff around and then delivers repeated leg drops off the rope. Matt puts his foot on Jeff’s chest and raises his arm in the air and we go to commercial break.

WWE Smack of the Night: The Great Khali defeats Santino Marella last Monday on Raw and now Santina Marella, Santino’s alleged sister, must kiss Khali on the next kiss cam.

The Punjabi Playboy and Ranjin Singh are in the ring to talk about Khali not being able to wait until next week to kiss Santina and we have the Khali Kiss Cam tonight and they are looking for volunteers! A surprisingly attractive girl from Tennessee volunteers and Kahli gets his smooch on. Maryse is backstage and heading to the ring and we go to commercial break.

Maryse, Diva’s Champion vs. Gail Kim

I did not see either of these women get a warm welcome. Maryse does a little dancing on the ring apron to avoid Gail but Gail charges and is sent through the ropes and to the floor. Maryse does have a nice face plant move, which she uses on Kim. Gail delivers a leg sweep and covers for two. Kim comes off the top rope and nearly misses the mark, delivers a kick to the face and covers for three.

Winner: Gail Kim via pinfall.

It was a divas match and passable as such. Grisham and Ross talk about next Monday night it will be Triple H vs. Randy Orton and they will face off tonight.

R-Truth and we go to commercial break.

vs. John Morrison

The bell rings, the two lock up with Truth applying a side headlock. Morrison uses the hair to break the hold but R-Truth delivers a high leg, covers and gets two. John springboards off the ropes and delivers a boot to the head, covers and gets two. Morrison delivers a drop toehold and uses the ropes to choke Truth. R-Truth delivers a jawbreaker, covers and gets two. Truth delivers a boot to the face, covers and gets two. John delivers the corkscrew neckbreaker, covers and gets three.

Winner: John Morrison via pinfall.

The match was too short but otherwise not bad in the wrestling department. Triple H is heading to the ring and we go to commercial break. I apologize for saying that this would be a confusing Smackdown because of the draft. The moves did not take place this week. It appears we still have that to look forward to.

Triple H, WWE Champion, makes his way to the ring to loud cheers from the live audience. Randy Orton’s entrance music begins but Orton does not appear at the top of the ramp. The music stops, begins again and Randy appears on the big screen to tell HHH that he is not going to get a chance to fight tonight. Orton says he isn’t worried about their match next Monday because he is sure that Trips will get himself disqualified. We have a lot of mind games going on but Triple H keeps laughing and Randy loses his cool. HHH says he knows something Orton he knows something Orton doesn’t know. The match they have coming up is a No DQ match with no rules and no titles on the line. The cerebral assassin strikes again and tells Randy that this Monday he is going to finish it. Nice little sideshow with Triple H doing what he does so well and we go to commercial break.

We see a replay of the opening match between Big Show and Jeff Hardy with interference by Matt Hardy. Matt is backstage with Theodore Long with Teddy telling Hardy that he will face Jeff Hardy in an I Quit Match.

”The Gold Standard” Shelton Benjamin vs. The Undertaker

JR and Todd talk about Taker’s match at Wrestlemania and his 17-0 record as the Dead Man makes his way to the ring. The referee calls for the bell and Shelton isn’t wanting to lock up but he can’t get away from Undertaker. Taker delivers an elbow drop and covers but Shelton kicks out. The Dead Man applies a wristlock and works on Benjamin’s left shoulder before going old school. Shelton counters a suplex and delivers a neck breaker and we go to commercial break.

Back to the action, Shelton has the upper hand, goes for a cover and Taker kicks out. Benjamin continues to work on the Dead Man’s neck. Benjamin delivers a fist and Taker makes a brief comeback before Benjamin goes to work on the neck again. Undertaker gets turned over and has Shelton by the throat, Shelton fights out and the two throw fists in the center of the ring until Shelton hits the mat. The Dead Man catches boots in the corner, Taker catches Shelton in a choke, Shelton counters and delivers a DDT. Taker kicks out of the cover and sits up, Shelton delivers a suplex, has the shoulders down and gets two. Benjamin draws his thumb over his throat, goes for a move, Undertaker counters with a Tombstone piledriver, covers and gets three.

Winner: The Undertaker via pinfall.

Amazing work by The Undertaker after the match he had against Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania. Shelton Benjamin did a great job working against the Dead Man in this match up. This one was worth watching. M.V.P. is backstage and is Teddy Long appears to tell him he wishes him the best of luck on Monday Night Raw. I think Dolph Ziggler is there to introduce himself but Long interrupts him and we go to commercial break.

M.V.P., WWE United States Champion vs. Dolph Ziggler

I am going to miss MVP on Smackdown. Ziggler delivers a face push but MVP takes a swing and connects, Ziggler avoids a kick off the ropes by sliding out of the ring. Back in the ring, Dolph delivers a boot to the abdomen but Porter comes back and drops Dolph on his face on the mat. Ziggler avoids the corner kick but catches Montel’s shoulder on the ropes after Montel is distracted by the ref. Ziggler covers and gets two. Dolph goes to work on MVP’s arm. Porter is back to his feet and delivers a nice slam as Ziggler comes off the ropes. Montel delivers a facebreaker and checks with the audience to see how he is doing, delivers an elbow drop, covers and gets two. MVP catches a boot in the corner, is shoved into the turnbuckle, Ziggler covers, holds the trunks in a roll up and gets the three.

Winner: Dolph Ziggler by cheating.

Not a bad match and Ziggler takes the mic after the match to introduce himself to M.V.P. Batista will face Legacy’s Ted Dibiase next and we go to commercial break.

Todd and JR reminds everyone that Backlash is only 9 days away and they go over the matches that are scheduled for that pay per view event.

”The Animal” Batista vs. Ted DiBiase

The bell ring and it going to be a brawl with Batista going for an early cover and Ted kicking out. Batista delivers a suplex, covers and gets two. Batista goes for the Batista bomb but DiBiase goes for the leg and we go to commercial break.

Back to the ring, Ted is still working on the leg but Batista comes back with hard right hands. DiBiase catches a boot off the ropes, but Batista ends up going through the ropes and out to the floor. Ted rolls out after him and goes for the leg with a chop block before rolling himself back into the ring. DiBiase uses the ring post to deliver more punishment to Batista’s knee and leg. The audience gets loud for Batista, who goes for an inside cradle and gets two but Ted goes back to work on the leg. Batista manages to kick DiBiase off, delivers a spine buster, but catches a light boot in the corner. Batista catches Ted with a spear and gets fired up, delivers the Batista bomb, covers and gets three.

Winner: Batista via pinfall.

A decent closing match for Smackdown this week.
