More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks – Too Much of a Good Thing?

Columns, Top Story

So, I’ve finally got 100 percent of my CD collection in my possession. But now that I’ve got everything, I find it sort of overwhelming… I find it way overwhelming.

First off, when the last shipment arrived it had three times as many CDs as I thought I was missing; apparently, I’d forgotten about quite a few albums. So while there were a couple dozen albums that I was looking forward to hearing again, there were another few dozen that were completely off my radar.

Some of those forgotten albums were albums that, frankly, I really didn’t miss all that much (The Pharcyde’s Humboldt Beginnings). Others (Psycho Les’ Psycho Therapy the Soundtrack) were gems that I was slayed to have back. Most were middle-of-the-range stuff—things I didn’t regret buying but I wasn’t really in a rush to hear again.

But seriously, I’ve been trying to comb through the collection and revisit some stuff. I’m not talking all-out “New Year’s Resolution 2007”-type of revisiting, but a more lax come-and-go type affair. I’ve found that the stuff in my “Listen To” pile is towering way over the stuff in my “Already Listened” pile.

To further complicate things, I’m trying to do it in an order fashion. I mean, as much as I want to listen to Good News For People Who Love Bad News, I should probably wait until I’m actually fiending for Modest Mouse, so then I can put that in plus the four other Modest Mouse albums that recently arrived. And the same goes for Fabolous.

It’s funny because I was worried that because I’d only picked up four albums in the past five months that I wasn’t going to have anything “new” to listen to. For a second I toyed with the idea of listening exclusively to a different album every day. I also entertained taking an album and putting all the songs that I really disliked onto my iPod in an attempt to get a greater appreciation for the album. But clearly, despite the economic forecast, things aren’t that dire yet.

I guess I should be glad that I don’t have to take such measures, but I’d almost welcome it, rather than have a self-assigned pile of CDs to get through before I can absolve myself of the guilt of forgetting that said CDs were in my collection.

But again, I’m pretty sure it’s better to have too much of a good thing than not enough… right?
