Hello ladies and guys. Welcome to the 2009 NFL Draft. I’ll be here for atleast part of the day updating the draft as it happens. And since we already know what’s happening first, let’s get right to it.

With the first pick in the 2009 NFL Draft the Detroit Lions select: Matt Stafford QB
He’s already signed the stupidest contract in the history of the world, how does a rookie QB who’s never taken a snap get more money promised than Albert Haynesworth? That being said, Detroit will still take the full 10 minutes for some stupid reason and then St. Louis will be on the clock. Insiders say Eugene Monroe, I’d take Jason Smith though. We’ll see in a few hours when the draft actually starts.

Dear Marshall Faulk, the Lions WRs name is CALVIN Johnson, not Charles. Thank you, let’s move on.

With the second selection in the 2009 NFL Draft the St. Louis Rams select: Jason Smith LT
Good pick. Least downside in the draft. Great feet, great blocker. Love the pick for St. Louis and would have liked it if he went first overall. Silly that the Rams went over time on this pick. Next up is KC, Curry is the leading candidate.

The Chiefs select: Tyson Jackson DE/DT
Might have been a tad early for Jackson. But he’s the best 3-4 DE in the draft. He can move inside in pass rush situations. He’ll be a steady force on that D-line. It reunites Jackson with Glenn Dorsey. They have a pretty good D-line and that is where defense starts. Good pick. I thought he’d fall to Green Bay, but I’m not that surprised. Seattle is up, Sanchez is a candidate along with BJ Raji.

The Seattle Seahawks select: Aaron Curry LB
Best LB in the draft and Hawks needed to improve the defense. He can play inside or outside and will give a big boost to this D. Sanchez and therein Freeman could be in for a fall. Cleveland is up. Another Raji possibility or Michael Crabtree.

TRADE: New York Jets now on the clock. That means Sanchez will be the pick. This year’s first and second round pick along with 3 players. I would assume 3 players that Mangini rather likes.

The New York Jets select: Mark Sanchez QB
Don’t care for the pick. I agreed with Carrol when he said Sanchez needed more time. Now you’re going to pay him top 5 money when he’ll need 2-3 years before he’ll be able to do anything anyway. Clemens isn’t that bad of an option and will probably be no worse of an NFL QB than Sanchez. Now for Cincy, who knows? They need everything.

Cincy selects: Andre Smith OT
Third best OT in the draft but the one with the most questionable work ethic, so a perfect fit for the Bungles. Smith is a mauler in run blocking but a little questionable in pass coverage. Probably more of a RT in the pro’s but Cincy will probably plug him in at LT and see if he can keep from killing Carson Palmer. Not a great pick but it could be fun to watch in that train wreck kind of way. Raiders are on the clock, again, they need a lot and have a sea monster calling the shots. For all we know he’ll draft Jack Sparrow.

The Oakland Raiders select: Darrius Heyward-Bey WR
Can’t say I’m surprised. Bey is tall and ran a 4.3 40 at the combine. If he can catch a football he could have the same effect Randy Moss made as a rookie. I know that’s high praise, but DHB has about the same skill set so it’s not out of the realm of chance. It gives Russell someone to throw the ball deep down field to when he’s about to get planted into the ground. Not a terrible pick. Jacksonville is up, another WR is possible, Michael Crabtree or possibly Michael Johnson to give them a pass rush.

The Jacksonville Jaguars select: Eugene Monroe OT
Well they surprised me. Monroe is a good pick here though. He could have easily been a top 5 pick and could have been a number 1 overall selection if the Lions went OT like they should have. So getting him at 8 is a good value. The receiver class is deep so they should be able to get a decent player later on. I like the pick for Jacksonville. Green Bay is on the clock, BJ Raji is my slam dunk guess.

The Green Bay Packers select: BJ Raji DT
Raji is a man beast and can control the D-Line from the nose tackle position in Green Bay’s new 3-4 scheme. He’ll eat up blockers (and anything else you put in front of him) and keep the O-Line off the linebacks allowing them to make plays. He’s a great fit for GB and they should be thanking their lucky stars he fell to 9. San Fran is on the clock, I’ll be surprised if it’s not Michael Crabtree.

San Fransisco selects: Michael Crabtree WR
I’m deeply saddened by this pick as it means Crabtree won’t be going to Minnesota. My man crush on Crabtree is well known by now. He’s the best WR in the draft and possibly the best player in the draft. He’s amazing and should make who ever the QB is next year look better. Crabtree is a steal at 10.

The Buffalo Bills select: Aaron Maybin DE
A little bit of a surprise pick. A lot of people, myself included, thought Orakpo was the best pass rusher in the draft and Buffalo needs a pass rush. Maybin is a heck of a player and should do fine in the pro’s, but he’s more of a hybrid defender than a straight up DE.

The Denver Broncos select: Knowshon Moreno RB
Best RB in the class. But I don’t think that’s saying too much. He had a great freshman year, but really struggled last year. His starting LT did go down in the preseason and he is getting plugged into a great running team. Atleast they have been in the past, we’ll see how McDaniels team is able to run the ball. He’s been more of a passing guy in New England so it’s a little surprising to see him grab a RB here. I hate to say it, but I think this pick has a pretty high Bust possibility.

The Washington Redskins select: Brian Orakpo DE
Great Pick, great fit here for the Redskins. They had a terrible time getting pressure last year and Orakpo can bring a ton of pressure off the outside. Love the pick, he’ll be great opposite Andre Carter.

The New Orleans Saints select: Malcolm Jenkins DB
Would have been a first rounder last year if he would have came out but decided to go back and had a good final year at Ohio State. The Saints shouldn’t even think about putting him at corner, he should be moved to Saftey immediately and left there for the rest of his career. Good safties are better than good corners, because even the best corners give up TD’s when the saftey isn’t there to help.

The Houston Texans select: Brian Cushing LB
A nice pick here. I have both of his teammates ranked higher but Cushing has good versatility and should give the Texans a formidable linebacker group with Demeco Ryans. They’ve got the makings of a really good defense in Houston, and this keeps that trend going.

The San Diego Chargers select: Larry English DE
English is a heck of a pass rusher. I’m not sure he fits their 3-4 scheme but he could stand up and move back to OLB and be another force coming off the end for them. He’s a pure pass rusher and can get to the QB. A bit of puzzling pick but not a bad one.

TRADE: Tampa Bay trades up ahead of the Broncos to make sure they get Josh Freeman.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers select: Josh Freeman QB
Another stupid pick. The Bucs are getting old on Defense and should have used the pick on that. Freeman is project QB who has a moderately high ceiling but not one that you needed to take a first round flyer on. I’m not a huge fan of Freeman, but Tampa apparently was and they got the guy they wanted.

The Denver Broncos select: Robert Ayers DE
Ayers had one great year at Tennessee and that really launched him up the draft boards. If he can sustain that he’ll be a force coming off the outside for the Broncos. He can get to the QB and is decent against the run although he still needs work at that. He’ll be a good player for the Broncos. This was their best pick of their first round.

TRADE: Philadelphia trades up to the 19th spot to draft someone. Cleveland is picking up a ton of picks and players today. Good for them.

The Philadelphia Eagles select: Jeremy Maclin WR
Philly now has the most dynamic return game in the league. Maclin and Jackson are both dynamite returners. This pick is a little questionable for me. They have Jackson and Maclin is about the same type of receiver. That and I’m not a huge fan of Maclin’s to begin with. I think there were better options available but this could make Philly’s offense pretty darn good next year.

The Detroit Lions select: Brandon Pettigrew TE
I understand this pick. They are surrounding Matt Stafford with talent. I get that. But holy crap it does not matter when Stafford will not have any freaking time in the pocket. Matt Stafford will be using a walker by week 4. This is mind numbing stupidity by the Lions front office. This was a great year for Offensive linemen which was one of their biggest needs and now they’re hoping one falls to them at the start of the second round. They would have had a better chance of Pettigrew or Cook falling to them in the second round. This should have been Michael Oher. Dumb dumb pick.

The Cleveland Browns select: Alex Mack C
Wow…ok. The Browns trade down and trade down and finally select Alex Mack. I’m actually a little dissapointed, I was hoping the Vikings would take him with the next pick. Mack is the best C in the class and it is a deep class at C. Cleveland needs work on the line and they must think they can get a good skill position player in the second round. So a bit of an oddball pick, but not terrible.

The Minnesota Vikings select: Percy Harvin Pothead
Way to have morals and select high class guys Childress. Nice to see you’ve finally sold out and drafted talent ahead of human being skills. Idiot. Stupid stupid stupid. Percy is a good player. Not saying he isn’t. He’s explosive and can score from anywhere on the field. But for crying out loud, you know you’re going to be tested for drugs during the lead up to the draft how the hell can you test positive for mary jane? You have to be one of the stupidest people in the world thats how. Dumb pick, dumb player, dumb coach. I can’t wait for him to be fired. I want to cry right now.

TRADE: Baltimore trades up, New England drops down yet again, they like doing that.

The Baltimore Ravens select: Michael Oher OT
A good fit for Baltimore. He’s a good downhill run blocker and a mountain of a man at that. He’ll fill in at T and be a cornerstone of the offensive line for a good long time just like Ogden before him. I’m not putting him on Ogden’s level just yet, but he’ll be a good cornerstone player for them.

The Atlanta Falcons select: Peria Jerry DT
He’s a good player at this point. He could have went a lot higher than this. It’s wasn’t Atlanta’s biggest need, but he was probably the best player left on their board so they drafted talent over need. He’ll work out just fine in Atlanta and should give them a needed boost on defense.

The Miami Dolphins select: Vontae Davis CB
Vontae Davis might be the best true corner in the draft. Jenkins should get moved to saftey so that means Miami got a great deal here on Davis. He’ll be a solid corner for them allowing them more time to get after the QB. Good pick for Miami, they’re doing that alot recently.

TRADE: The Green Bay Packers trade with the New England Patriots. Not sure why.

The Green Bay Packers select: Clay Matthews OLB
A pretty good fit for the Packers 3-4. He played in a pro style defense at USC and was surrounded by talent. With that being said, I don’t know how much a pass rushing force he’s going to be coming off the outside. Interesting pick, but not a surprising one. They’ll need a good defense to get pressure on Cutler this year.

The Indianapolis Colts select: Donald Brown RB
Good pick here for the Colts. They’re thin at RB and Addai hasn’t shown that he’s able to stay healthy as the number 1 guy. Brown and Addai in the backfield should be a really good one, two punch. Many experts have Brown as the best RB in this class. And with the situation he’s going into, I think it’s possible to say he’ll have the best career of any of the running backs taken this year.

The Buffalo Bills select: Eric Wood C
Two centers in the first round, it’s been a while since that has happened. I can’t complain about it though. Wood and Mack are both great players at the center position. Wood is a smart player with a ton of potential. I think they needed an tackle or guard a little bit more, Wood was the best O-linemen left on the board and should make the entire line better.

The New York Giants select: Hakeem Nicks WR
Not sure they’ll be keeping Nicks as they’ve been in talks to trade for Boldin and Edwards, so this might be a draft and trade. Nicks is a good player who exploded onto the scene this year for a very surprising UNC team. I know a couple of guys on the forums who think Nicks is going to be a great player, so we’ll wait and see.

The Tennessee Titans select: Kenny Britt WR
Another WR taken in the first round. And we all know how well WR in the first round work out. I’m guessing only 1 or 2 of them will actually have NFL careers of note. Britt probably won’t be one of them. Kenny is a decent player and by all accounts is probably a nice enough guy. But when you draft a WR in the first round, he should be your number 1 option and I don’t think Britt is a number 1 NFL WR. That being said, WR was Tennessee’s biggest hole and Britt was the best available, so you can’t knock them for drafting him. He was the best bet.

The Arizona Cardinals select: Chris Wells RB
Not a huge surprise here. The running game was Arizona’s only problem last year and with Boldin potentially leaving via trade they needed to upgrade the running back position. Wells is a big back who can punish tacklers. He’s not going to run away from anyone but he’ll run hard and run down hil, so he should be a good fit in ‘Zona.

The Pittsburgh Steelers select: Evander Hood DT
Don’t really understand this one. The steelers D-line is one of their strong suits. This must be protection in case Casey Hampton’s head gets so big he can’t get it inside his helmet next year. Puzzling pick, but you can’t really question the Steelers, they’ve been great at the draft for years.

ROUND 2

1 Lions Louis Delmas CB/S Local boy starts off round 2. Should play saftey in the pros.
2 Patriots Patrick Chung SS Another great pick for the Pats.
3 Rams James Laurinaitis ILB The Animal Part 2, I’m surprised he went befor Maualuga.
4 Browns Brian Robiskie WR Very questionable pick, even more so after seeing the pick later in the round.
5 Broncos Alphonso Smith CB Bailey is getting older and they have nothing else in the secondary, good pick.
6 Bengals Rey Maualuga ILB Man crush number 2 goes to another team not from Minnesota.
7 Jaguars Eben Britton OT The Jags completely remade their O-Line now, I like this as a value pick.
8 Patriots Ron Brace DT Only question about Brace is how much he was helped by playing next to BJ Raji.
9 Patriots Darius Butler CB The rich get richer, Butler is a very good cover man.
10 Bills Jairus Byrd CB
11 Panthers Everette Brown DE Good pick, should ease the blow of losing Peppers.
12 Dolphins Pat White QB Could Miami be the first team to exclusively run the Wildcat? Pat White and Ronnie Brown in the same backfield = nightmare to gameplan against.
13 Giants Clint Sintim OLB
14 Texans Connor Barwin DE
15 Raiders Michael Mitchell S
16 Broncos Darcel McBath CB
17 Seahawks Max Unger OC
18 Browns Mohamed Massaquoi WR Not great speed, but a good route runner and has good hands.
19 Bills Andy Levitre OL
20 Browns David Veikune DE
21 Eagles LeSean McCoy RB Great pick. Will help out that offense a ton. He’s an explosive one cut and go runner.
22 Vikings Phil Loadholt OL He’s certainly a load. A mountain of humanity that was a projected first rounder. Good value, doesn’t make up for Harvin though.
23 Falcons William Moore S
24 Colts Fili Moala DT Great Pick, he’ll help the run defense immediately.
25 Ravens Paul Kruger DE
26 Patriots Sebastian Vollmer OL
27 Panthers Sherrod Martin S
28 Giants William Beatty OT
29 Dolphins Sean Smith CB
30 Titans Sen’Derrick Marks DT Great Value here, I originally had him in my top 15.
31 Cardinals Cody Brown DE
32 Broncos Richard Quinn TE
