10 Thoughts On SmackDown – 05.01.09

Reviews, Shows, TV Shows

The first 10 thoughts following Backlash, and the first SmackDown where the draft actually takes effect.

1. With the draft now in effect the first thing that struck me about SmackDown is that they certainly have the more exciting main event scene. Without stars such as John Cena, Triple H and Batista on the brand there is the room for the likes of Edge, Chris Jericho, Jeff Hardy and CM Punk to make up a very exciting and unpredictable main event scene.

2. Very interesting start to the show this week. Personally, one thing about the draft that excites me is the thought of an Edge vs. Chris Jericho feud. These two, while both being heels could put on not only some exciting matches, but also some exciting segments. They’re exciting on their own, just think what they could do given the chance.

3. Morrison is one of the stars who got the better of the draft. His match with Shelton was great, and if given a bit more time could have been a big talking point of the show. With how flexible the SmackDown main event scene is right now, I could easily see Morrison being a main eventer within the next six months.

4. While it may have been short, The Jericho/ Great Khali segment was great. I don’t know why, but Khali is one of my favourite faces right now.

5. Kane should never have been eliminated first in the four way elimination match. SmackDown needs a dominant heel monster in the main event to take on the same kind of role that Big Show takes on RAW, and while Kane’s attack after the match served this to some purpose, he should have been in the last two.

6. I can’t say I’m happy that we’re getting an Edge/ Jeff Hardy feud. I would have preferred to have seen somebody else step up and get their chance.

7. Was there much point in the dance off? Well it’s always fun to see Cryme Time on screen, I didn’t think it served any purpose, because there is no way I want to see Eve and Layla in one on one action.

8. Are MVP and Sherri Shepherd the new celebrity power couple? Well, no. But they certainly make an entertaining pair. But more noticeable for the United States Championship match was just how big Ziggler could be. WWE needs to package him with a Lex Luger style Narcissist gimmick and push him in the Intercontinental Championship division.

9. A Chris Jericho vs. John Morrison feud? Hell yes. It appears that Morrison is working as a babyface on SmackDown, which is fine with me as long as it gives him some big feuds. And there is no bigger feud that Morrison could have right now to propel him that one with Chris Jericho.

10. There were multiple things I can point out for the main event. This was a superb match which shows exactly what I was talking about regarding the SmackDown main event scene, CM Punk should not have won since it just makes Edge look weak, Jeff Hardy’s attack just makes Edge look even weaker. But the most important thing is that Umaga is back. While I was hoping Kane would take on the monster main event heel spot, it appears that Umaga will be working that spot, and I for one am pretty happy about that.
