Final Update: White Sox and Padres Have Deal in Place for Peavy; Peavy Declines Trade

News, Top Story

It’s being reported that the White Sox and Padres have a deal in place to send ace Jake Peavy to the White Sox. Peavy has the right to refuse the trade and both sides are waiting for his approval. Players in the deal won’t be revealed until the deal is approved.

So much for my thought that he’d be dealt after the season.

The White Sox become the instant favorites in the AL Central if the deal goes through. He’s been pitching great this season, but it remains to be see how he’ll pitch in the AL and how the move from Petco Park will effect his numbers. He’s still a great pitcher on the road, but that park helped him immensely.

More on this as it develops.

Update: The White Sox are expected to send 4 prospects to the Padres – including starters Aaron Poreda and Clayton Richard. Gordon Beckham is not expected to be dealt as all 4 prospects are expected to be pitchers; it’s still a possibility as he could be added as a player to be named later (players can not be traded until the have been signed for 1 full year; as a PTBNL, they can agree to deal him, but not do it until after that year is up). No official word has been sent yet, as Peavy has still not approved the trade.

Update 2: ESPN is reporting that Peavy’s agent is claiming his client is leaning towards vetoing the trade at this time. He said that it’s something that he could re-visit later in the season. It’s known that his preference is to stay in the NL and with a team on the west coast or in the mid-west.

Reports are also stating that the 3rd player in the deal is starter Lance Broadway.

Update 3: As everyone probably knows, the deal has been killed by Peavy. He’s said that San Diego is the place for him and his family. One reason why the deal probably didn’t go through – the White Sox weren’t willing to pick up his $22MM option.

Look for more Peavy deals thoughout the season.
