MMA Weekly has the scoop:
Japanese star Takanori Gomi is in advanced negotiations to face Brett Cooper at Affliction “Trilogy” on Aug. 1, MMAWeekly.com has learned from sources close to the fight.
Both parties have agreed to the match-up, though financial considerations are still being ironed out. The fight is being considered at a 165-pound weight limit.
I’ve been hearing rumors for several months that Gomi is almost a lock to join the UFC at some point in 2009, and this news only lends credence to that idea. Gomi may not even be entirely relevant at this point in his career, but a break into the American market certainly couldn’t hurt.
UPDATE: Affliction’s Tom Atencio says that Gomi and Cooper couldn’t agree on a weight class for the fight, and it won’t be taking place.
