Reports circulated last week that the UFC and WEC could soon be completing a merger. Dana White was asked about the possibility of a merger at the UFC 101 pre-fight press conference.
“We’re working on that now,” White said.
It appears that White may have been speaking off the cuff. We spoke this afternoon with the General Manager of the WEC, Reed Harris, and he assured us that White didn’t mean what he said.
“Dana said it, but he didn’t mean the weight classes were being folded into the UFC. He didn’t even realize that he said it until I texted him about it,” said Harris. “He was referring to co-branding and things of that nature. We’re already merged because they own us.”
