This has to be the biggest steal of the season. If Smoltz throws a few strikes, he will have earned his 100k salary from the Cardinals. He is already better than the 5th starting pitchers (Wellemeyer or Boggs) that the Cardinals currently have and honestly can’t do any worse. If and when the Cardinals do make the playoffs, they will only be going to a 3-man rotation and Smoltz will be a great setup man for Franklin. At his current age, Smoltz best performance is 1-2 innings anyways. But why not give him the chance to be a starting pitcher for the remaining season. I don’t see how the Cardinals can go wrong with this move. I had my doubts about Cardinals GM Mozeliak but this one gets a thumbs up from me.
