Lesnar vs. Carwin official for UFC 106

News, Top Story

MMA Madness had the original report: heavyweight prospect Shane Carwin has been pulled from his bout with Cain Velasquez at UFC 104. Instead, he’ll get a UFC heavyweight title shot against Brock Lesnar on the Nov. 21 UFC 106 card.

Carwin posted the following on his official website:

Lots of talk going around right now. It seems to stem from a twitter post out of MN. I can’t confirm or deny anything I can just tell you guys that I am training harder then ever and your support and loyalty will carry me through any fight they send my way. With you guys on my side I am ready for whatever happens. Stay tuned to the site or UFC.com for any official news about me.

The Lesnar/Carwin fight would serve as the main event of UFC 106, which also features the return of Tito Ortiz against Mark Coleman.

Listen to my interview with Shane Carwin, where we discuss the potential of fighting Brock Lesnar and what he thinks about the current heavyweight champion.

UPDATE: Fighters Only has a report saying they’ve confirmed the story with a “well-placed source”. We have not heard back from Carwin’s camp with official word and likely will not until bout agreements are in place.

We have also confirmed that the current plan is for Velasquez to fight the winner of the Lesnar/Carwin match. That would indicate that Randy Couture, should he beat Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 102, will likely drop to light heavyweight for a bout with either Anderson Silva or Lyoto Machida.

UPDATE 2: Both MMA Junkie and MMA Fanhouse have confirmed that the Lesnar vs. Carwin fight is a go. Cain Velasquez was told that he’d be getting a new opponent for UFC 104. The plan is to try and get in another Lesnar fight before the end of February 2010 as well.

UPDATE 3: Dana White has confirmed the Lesnar vs. Carwin fight.

“Brock is ready to go now and wants to fight. Carwin makes the most sense. He’s 11-0 and he’sw been kicking the shit out of everybody. Gonzaga destroyed Cro Cop and he (Carwin) totally destroyed Gonzaga. Plus, he hates Brock Lesnar.”
