WWE Superstars Recap 8/27/09

Reviews, Shows, Top Story, TV Shows

In the aftermath of Summer Slam, what can we expect from tonight’s edition of WWE Superstars on WGN? How about a match to decide who will challenge for the Intercontinental Championship at the next WWE pay-per-view Breaking Point?

Primo Colon vs Jack Swagger: Swagger quickly takes control of the situation using his amateur skills down on the mat. Primo gets a flying head scissors out of a launch into the other corner but Jack ends this brief offensive flourish with a flapjack. Swagger seems to be paying homage to Scott Steiner this evening as he pauses to do a few push-ups for the second time already tonight. Primo gets locked into a bearhug then an abdominal stretch for an extended sequence that ultimately leads to him being sent outside the ring as we are sent to a commercial break.

We return to Primo being launched into the air via a back body drop. Swagger misses a big splash near the corner and Primo gets rolling with a series of high flying maneuvers including a crossbody for a two count. Primo follows with a side russian suplex for two, but then gets floored by a belly-to-belly suplex. Primo blocks the gut-wrench powerbomb and turns it into a roll-up for a two-count but he misses a slingshot clothesline attempt and Swagger hits his finisher for a pinfall victory. Post match Swagger takes the mic from Lilian and cuts a promo on Kofi Kingston about wanting the US title.

We get our frequent “ask the Divas” segment which I won’t bother to recap. But before the commercial break, we also see mild-mannered Gregory Helms using a closet to change into the Hurricane. I guess no phone booths were available backstage.

The Hurricane vs Paul Burchill (with Katie Lea): This is the Hurricane’s Superstars debut but apparently these two are developing somewhat of a feud over on ECW. Neither man is able to gain the early advantage until Burchill is clotheslined outside of the ring by Matt Striker’s hero. Hurricane tries to follow with a crossbody but misses. Paul sends him back inside and takes control of things with a series of hold down on the matt sandwiched around a neckbreaker. Thesz press leads to a flourish by the WWE superhero that Burchill halts with a Pelé kick. Striker is trying way too hard to make comic book references during the match. I’ll give him credit for the number of characters named but not for saying one during every comment he makes.

After a neckbreaker of his own and a crossbody from the top, the Hurricane looks for the Shining Wizard but Burchill takes a break on the outside. Hurricane quickly follows him out and slams his head into ring apron. He then tries to suplex him back into the ring but Katie Lea holds onto her brother’s legs to halt the move. Burchill follows up by dropping our hero’s neck across the ropes then quickly slides into the ring and rolls his opponent up for the pinfall victory. Decent match but the announcing was annoying.

Our Superstar video of the week is fittingly for the Undertaker who made his return at Summer Slam. I am really looking forward to his upcoming feud with CM Punk. Speaking of Punk, we are also shown that he will defend his World Heavyweight Championship tomorrow night on Smackdown against Jeff Hardy in a steel cage match.

Dolph Ziggler vs Fit Finlay vs Mike Knox: Ziggler cuts a pre-match promo to tell us Mysterio’s win over him at Summer Slam was a fluke and that he’s winning tonight and at Breaking Point. Both of the heels start the match wanting to go after Finlay. He ducks outside of the ring and drops Ziggler but Knox uses this distraction to attack. The action returns to the ring for all 3 men but only briefly as Finlay and Mike take it back outside. Ziggler tries a baseball slide but Fit gets him caught in the ring apron during the attempt. Finlay and then Knox both use this advantage to pound on Dolph for a bit before taking things back into the ring. Knox is again sent out of the ring by a dropkick from Ziggler who then turns his attention to Finlay. Fit and Dolph fight on the top rope in the corner but Knox breaks it up by putting Finlay on his shoulders and dropping him to the mat. Ziggler tries to follow with a leg drop but misses and all three men are down on the mat as we head to some commercials.

When we return Knox hits a big boot on Ziggler but can’t continue his advantage as Fit and Dolph team-up to nail him with a double ddt. Ziggler is sent outside and Finlay tries to take control on Knox. Ziggler tries to get back inside and Fit prevents that then slams him back first into the ring apron. Knox follows them out and attacks both men and they both soon find their way back in the ring. Knox is also back in and hits a crossbody onto both and that leads to a 2.7 count on Finlay. Dolph misses a splash in the corner and Finlay goes for a submission but Knox breaks it up with a big boot to Fit and a double arm suplex on Ziggler. After taking a crossbody from the top rope and kicking out of the pin attempt by Finlay, Knox rolls his way over into the corner and picks up the shillelagh. Fit ducks the shillelagh shot and hits the Celtic Cross on Knox but before he can cover Dolph tosses him into the ring post and covers Knox for the victory and the title shot at Breaking Point. Pretty good triple threat match to end this week’s show.
