Randy Couture moving to light heavyweight

News

Randy Couture tells Sherdog that he’s leaning towards dropping to light heavyweight for his next fight.

“Maybe this year, or maybe the first of next year,” said Couture of his next bout. “I haven’t really looked at the cards and the shows that they have. What’s on the schedule, I don’t know, but I’m especially leaning towards dropping down. I’m pushing in weight. It would be easy for me to make 205 and there’s more interesting fights there right now.”

This is a no-brainer. Couture is at least two or three big wins away from getting a shot at the heavyweight championship again, and he would almost assuredly have to face Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at some point before earning another chance at Brock Lesnar. More importantly, there are far more big fights at light heavyweight for Couture, who has repeatedly stated that he’s only looking for “interesting” fights at this point in his career.

Couture said last month that he would welcome a chance to fight Anderson Silva. That might be the perfect matchup for Couture’s return to the division, as it would be a superfight that has almost no chance of hurting Randy in the eyes of the fans. A loss to Anderson Silva would be expected; a win over Anderson Silva? It would instantly turn him into the number one contender against Lyoto Machida.
