WWE Superstars Recap for 9/10/09

Reviews, Shows, Top Story, TV Shows

Football is in the air as the NFL kicks-off their season tonight and the ACC has another early season showcase as well. But that is for other recaps because on WGN tonight we’ve got a PPV to sell as the WWE Universe gets ready for Breaking Point on WWE Superstars!

Kane vs Jimmy Yang Wang: No offense to Jimmy but I didn’t even know he was still on the roster. Yang starts the match with a quick pace trying to go low with a series of kicks to the legs of the Big Red Machine. But this flurry does not last long as he runs into a big boot from Kane and the beatdown begins. A few tosses into the turnbuckles, a sidewalk slam and a chokeslam later Kane has won this match by pinfall. Post match Kane goes under the ring and pulls out a kendo stick and gets in a few shots to JYW before taking his leave. That wasn’t really a match just a friendly reminder that Kane is a “monster”.

Sheamus vs Yoshi Tatsu: At this point I’d like to point out that neither of the first two matches was listed this afternoon on WWE.com for tonight’s show. Yoshi tries to take it to Sheamus at the start but he is quickly overpowered and is taken down to the mat for a series of submission holds. A toss in the corner leads to a nice belly to back suplex by Sheamus on Tatsu but it is not enough for a three count. Yoshi makes the comeback with a series of kicks as Matt Striker is able to land a Storm Shadow reference. But the comeback is short lived as he runs into a big boot from Sheamus. That set’s him up for his finisher the Irish Curse and that is more than enough to give him the pinfall victory. It was quick but still a decent match.

Katie Lea Burchill vs Nikki Bella: Looks like we get a Matt Striker commentary double feature from ECW on this week’s episode. Nikki out-quicks Katie Lea to start but that comes to an abrupt end when she runs into a “swinging rock bottom back breaker” from Ms Burchill. Katie dominates on the mat for a bit before a sisterly distraction leads to a roll-up attempt by Nikki but it is not enough for a pin. Burchill quickly regains control with a Samoan drop and things are again looking grim for this particular Bella twin. The action gets taken to the corner and both the ref and Katie get distracted just long enough for Brie to switch places with her sister and climb the top rope. Ms Burchill turns around right into a crossbody from the top rope and it is enough to get the pinfall victory in this joint effort for the Bella twins. I still think this gimmick is better suited to a heel team, but there was some good stuff in there and I enjoyed the match.

Our Superstars spotlight video of the week is for Ted Dibiase and Cody Rhodes from Legacy. Instead of a recap of Raw we instead get a recap of the CM Punk/Undertaker related happenings from last week’s episode of Smackdown as a means to remind us of their match this Sunday at Breaking Point.

Dolph Ziggler vs Slam Master J: The Intercontinental title match Ziggler earned two weeks ago on this very program is no longer scheduled for this Sunday’s pay-per-view but according to JR he is still the #1 contender. J tries to work the arm a couple of times to start things but Dolph is having none of that. After a battle in the corner, SMJ is knocked off the apron and onto the floor. Surprisingly Ziggler does not attempt any offense on the outside but he does toss his opponent back in. As the action returns to the ring, after a neckbreaker, Dolph controls the action for an extended period with an aggressive headlock on the mat. Todd and JR seem to be overly combative towards each other in their commentary tonight. J makes a comeback with a flurry of strikes off the ropes but it does not last long as Ziggler hit a jawbreaker and his finisher and that is enough to earn him the pinfall victory. Pretty much a squash match for Ziggler.

The Miz & Jack Swagger vs US Champion Kofi Kingston & Primo: Kofi and Swagger start us off and battle over a side headlock before Kofi is able to out quick Swagger to gain the advantage. Primo is tagged into action and he and Kofi team for some tandem offense. Primo can’t hold the advantage for long as Swagger roughs him up in the corner and then hits a nice gutwrench powerbomb but the pinfall attempt is broken up by Kofi. Miz tags in and temporarily continues the beating on Primo. But Kofi is able to get the hot tag and lights up the crowd and the Miz with some highflying offense. The US champ has Miz set-up for the legdrop but Swagger pulls him out of the ring which leads to dives to the outside by both Primo and Kofi. Quickly back in the ring, Kofi hits a crossbody from the top rope onto Miz but it is not enough to pick-up the three count. Swagger again distracts Kingston from the outside and that gives Miz the opportunity to hit his finisher the Skull Crushing Finale and gain the pinfall victory for his team. Not a very long match but there was some nice fast paced action involved and that’s all for this week’s episode of Superstars.
