ECW Real-Time Coverage for 9/15/2009

Reviews, Shows, Top Story, TV Shows

Tonight’s live ECW coverage is not as “live” as it normally is – as I’m filling in last minute. Here goes nothing!

We get highlights of the sole ECW match on this past Sunday’s Breaking Point PPV, which saw Christian retain the title in defense against William Regal. The theme song plays and…

ECW GM Tiffany comes out, but before she gets to say much, the 2008 King of the Ring Regal comes out flanked by Misters Jackson and Kozlov. Regal’s not too happy that J&K were banished from ringside during the PPV bout. She states that as a former GM, he should know the importance of keeping order, yet he says it caused him “unnecessary grief” and he wants a rematch. She announces a battle royale to determine a new #1 contender (apparently instead of the originally-planned Christian & Dreamer vs. Jackson & Kozlov match). And no, he’s not involved. Instead it’s…

The Hurricane vs. William Regal

But first… COMMERCIALS

We’re back and the match is in progress, and Regal is in his street clothes. We get lots of commentary about the controversy behind The Hurricane’s true identity (despite the fact the Titantron video called him “Hurricane Helms” just a few weeks ago). I don’t do play-by-play, but just know that, as should never be the case, the Power of Evil prevailed over Good, as Regal scored with a pinfall following the “Knee Trembler” (running left knee to the head). This time.
Winner – The King

Following the match, Regal’s former associate Paul Burchill attacks Helmsicane from behind and hits the “dangerous buster, jackhammer-like” (according to Matt Striker), and then stands over him.

Backstage, we’ve got Goldust giving Yoshi an English lesson in the locker room. He learns things like “Where is the train station?” “How much is a cup of coffee – ee ee ee – coffee?” Zack Ryder shows up, and Goldust has apparently taught young Yoshi that “Zack Ryder” means “loser.” Apparently they’ll be facing off later tonight. Woo woo woo you know it.

COMMERCIALS

Burchill’s backstage, and is approached by “a new backstage interviewer” (Angela Fong, a.k.a. Savannah). He says: “Where’s Gregory Helms? Oh yeah, he’s in the ring where I left him laying in a heap.” Helms deserved it for the way he treated Paul’s sister, and he’s an impostor, etc.

The Bella Twins come out to guest ring-announce… and we have YOSHI TATSU’S MUSIC! Of course, Striker prefer’s his opponent’s entrance anthem.

Yoshi Tatsu vs. Zack Ryder
Decent television match with back-and-forth action but not much crowd heat until the final minute. Tatsu with a kick to the head and the 1-2-3.
Winner – Yoshi

COMMERCIALS

We come back with a Breaking Point recap and the beginning of hype for the new Hell in a Cell PPV. Already scheduled: WWE Champ John Cena vs. Randy Orton and DX vs. Legacy, both in the Cell.

Tony Chimel is back on the mic, and it’s battle royale time.

Battle Royale for the #1 Contendership
Participants are Shelton Benjamin, Vladamir Kozlov, Ezekiel Jackson, Tommy Dreamer, Goldust, Tyler Reks, Sheamus O’Shaunessy, Yoshi Tatsu, Paul Burchill, Zack Ryder. What men are NOT in the match? Abraham Washington, DJ Gabriel, The Hurricane and Tony Atlas. With Washington and Atlas not really active wrestlers and Hurricane already in action and seemingly out for the night, all I have to say is I feel bad for the DJ. Typical battle royale, with one early elimination, then some Kozlov running wild, some cat-skinning by Benjamin, a Kozlov/Jackson stare-down, a big “Gold-Dust” chant(!), etc.

Order of elimination:
1 – Burchill (exploder suplexed out by Benjamin)
2 – Reks (tossed out by Kozlov)
3 – Tatsu (by Jackson)
4 – Sheamus (lariet by Benjamin)
5 – Jackson (pulled out by Benjamin’s legs)
6 – Benjamin (pulled down by already-eliminated Sheamus)

Final four: Ryder, Kozlov, Dreamer & Goldust. Um, that’s surprising. Benjamin and Sheamus brawl but that gets broken up by some extra refs. The crowd is REALLY into Dustin, and honestly, so am I. The guy’s looked great since re-joining WWE. It’s hard to believe the same guy was in the Black Reign costume — and as I type this, Zack pulls the ropes down and Goldy is dust. Striker predicts Ryder, which I guess means Vlad’s winning…

…but no sooner do I write THAT then Dreamer eliminates Kozlov and Ryder comes up behind the former ECW Champ and gets rid of him. Wow!

Winner – Zack Ryder

Good for him, and a really fun hour of wrestling. I like him as a worker, just hate his catch phrase and ring attire, so let’s see how much they give him against Christian at the PPV or whenever that match takes place.

Good night!
