Ryan Couture has royal MMA blood in his veins. For a man like Ryan, though, that greatness is held high, but is no guarantee for his own destiny. Ryan understands his legacy is in his own hands.
Ryan is building a respectable amateur record and getting stronger as he goes along.
Recently Ryan had an explosive match with a very game Jimmy Spicuzza. The event, Future Stars of MMA was put on by the premier Las Vegas amateur promotion Tuff-N-Uff. In a fight that ended in the first round, Vegas fight fans were treated to a back and forth hard fought battle.
In a heated exchange both fighters landed heavy blows. A right by Spicuzza dropped Couture. It came directly after Couture stunned him with a shot. It was an impressive exchange by both fighters. Ryan found himself on his back, and recovered quickly to sneak in a crafty armbar on his opponent.
It lasted 1 minute 22 seconds, but it spoke volumes about Ryan’s heart, and abilities. Ryan was able to withstand the onslaught and emerge victorious against an extremely tough fighter.
Ryan had this to say about his most recent victory. “He was real tough, it was a very fun fight. I was thrilled with the win, especially to come from the brink of defeat like I did, I was really fired up about that.”
Ryan had nothing but respect and praise for Spicuzza. “I was very impressed with Jimmy. He was a lot faster than I thought he would be and a lot sharper with his hands so hats off to him. I was lucky to catch him when I did.”
Ryan also had nothing but kind words about the organization he was fighting for in Tuff-N-Uff. “They have always been real great to deal with, very professional, very business like. They treat us really well and we are more than happy to put our fighters on their cards because we know they are going to do the right thing by the fighters. They are not out to exploit anybody, they just want to put on a good show and that’s exactly what they do.”
“Coming up real soon on October 2nd, Ill be fighting for Matt Lindland’s Sport Fight promotion.” His opponent, “A guy name Nick Albert, he trains with Dan Henderson’s Team Quest Camp.” “He has a strong wrestling background, he should be a tough opponent for me.”
With a name like Couture some might ask why not jump right in the sport head first? His thoughts on that issue really display his individualism and the desire to make his mark last, not just make dollar signs based on name recognition.
“In the short term I could probably get a few good paydays but I’m setting my self up for failure because their are promoters that will try and turn me in against their guys that they are trying to build,and just use my name to leapfrog him up. I’d rather know that I’m absolutely ready to take that next step, and that if someone wants to throw me in there with a tough guy that I’m going to be ready to give him fight and hopefully beat him. I don’t think it should just be about my name, it should be about my skills.”
Regarding a potential professional debut. “I’m taking it a fight at at time. If I had to ballpark it I would say mid next year.” It should be exciting to watch Ryan climb his way up to compete as a professional.
One might assume it was a given that Ryan would follow in his fathers footsteps and become a fighter. It so happens it wasn’t necessarily in the cards. “For a long time I actually said I wouldn’t because of all of the expectations that come along with following in his footsteps. I still don’t have any kind of expectation that I’m ever going to, or that anyone really is going to accomplish the kind of things hes done. I think that would be setting the bar too high. I’ve found that its something I’m passionate about and I think I can make a living doing what I love. I’m pursuing it and as long as I continue to feel that way about it I’m going to keep following that goal.”
Fighting isn’t the only aspiration Ryan has. “Id like to stay involved with the gym and with the family business that means a lot to me and hopefully I can help be a part of carrying it on once dads retired and moved on to other things and not as involved. Hopefully I can continue to help out and promote the gym and make it successful.”
