WWE Superstars recap for 9/24/09

Reviews, Shows, Top Story, TV Shows

We are a mere 10 days away from the WWE’s next PPV offering Hell In A Cell. What might the four matches tonight on WWE Superstars add to that big event? Not much. But we’ve still got Goldust versus William Regal and Matt Hardy battling Kane to enjoy tonight on WGN!

Chris Masters vs Primo: Primo uses his quickness to get some nice shots in early on Masters including a headscissors from the top rope. But his high flying offense is soon brought to an end with a clothesline by “the Masterpiece”.  Chris begins to slowly work over Primo down on the mat and in several of the corners with some of his standard offense. As Masters gets ready to apply his finisher, Primo is prepared for it and counters to set-up a fast-paced comeback. However as he bounces off the ropes looking for a crossbody Masters catches him with ease. But instead of a simple slam, Masters tries to flip him around to lock on the Masterlock and Primo is able to slip out of the hold and roll Chris up for a three count and the victory! Overall the match was nothing special but I really liked that finishing sequence.

Goldust vs William Regal: Vladimir Kozlov and Ezekiel Jackson accompany Sir William to ringside for this match. Apparently there was a confrontation between these two men last night on ECW to further build the drama of the match-up. Both men take turns trying to work on the other’s arm to start with Regal being the more animated of the two about it. As Goldilocks starts to gain some steam, Regal attempts to toss him outside the ring but he bounces right back in however it does lead to Regal gaining the advantage with the arm.

But Goldust will not go quietly and fights back with a series of clotheslines, a bulldog and a powerslam that garners him a 2.75 count. Regal goes low on Goldustin and sends him against the ropes as both he and Kozlov try to distract the ref so that Jackson can strike. However the distraction does not work and the ref still sees Jackson’s attack and calls for the DQ. Post match, Kozlov and Jackson join Regal in the ring to beat on Goldy for a bit. However the cavalry soon arrives as ECW Champion Christian, Tommy Dreamer and Yoshi Tatsu rush the ring and quickly dispatch the villains. I have a feeling viewers of ECW have not seen the end of these shenanigans.

Did you know that Batista is back? Did you know that he is back on Smackdown? Well if not you really should have been watching Superstars tonight because they had a video package to let you know.

Women’s Champion Michelle McCool & Layla vs Melina and Maria: Michelle is still selling her leg injury by limping down to the ring. To show off current Smackdown continuity, Melina and Maria do not enter together and Maria seems no less annoyed by her than the other divas involved with this match. Finally something Maria and I agree on. McCool and Melina begin the match and Michelle starts out fast and furious to try to gain the early advantage. But Melina quickly puts a halt to that with a headscissors and a dropkick that sends McCool looking for a tag from her partner.

Layla fares no better against Melina who bests her in a battle of the kicks before tagging in Maria. Maria keeps the advantage for her team until she is distracted by McCool allowing Layla to nail a kick. Maria quickly turns into your diva in peril as both Layla and Michelle tag in and out a few times and start to dominate the match. But Maria does manage to fight back and just as she is nearing a tag, Layla knocks Melina off the apron and McCool use the distraction to layout the lovely redhead with a big boot to the face and Layla casually covers her for the pinfall victory. I guess that was a decent and short tag-match that furthered all of the various issues between these ladies.

Our Smackdown Rebound this week is all about the controversy surrounding the World Championship match at Breaking Point and the fallout felt last week on Smackdown. I think we are all concerned about Teddy Long’s condition after being kidnapped by the Undertaker last week. I’ve been trying to follow the investigation of this heinous crime since it happened but sadly most of the media seems to have little coverage.

Kane vs Matt Hardy: Matt tries to out quick Kane to start but gets swatted away for his efforts. With those failures in mind Hardy instead tries to work over the arm of bigger man and has some success including hitting an axe handle from the top rope. But this flurry is also to be short lived as Kane again over powers Matt to begin his own assault. As the Big Red Machine starts to pound away on Hardy, he looks for an attack against the ropes but Matt pulls them down sending him sprawling over the top rope and the audience to a commercial break.

As we return from the break Matt dodges an attack in the corner and goes to the top rope for a yodeling attack. But somehow Kane seems to know it is coming and catches Hardy by the throat. Matt is able to slip out of the chokeslam attempt before getting laid out with a big boot from Kane. He looks to press his advantage utilizing a bearhug a few times on the smaller Hardy sandwiched around a nice sideslam. Matt would again fight back and gets a long two count after a sloppy bulldog attempt from the top rope. Hardy tries for the Twist of fate but when Kane blocks it he turns it into a ddt for another two count. Matt again looks for the Twist of Fate but Kane reverses it and drops Hardy crotch first over the top rope. As Kane continues this unfriendly assault on Matt’s groin the ref actually disqualifies him for his actions and awards the match via DQ to Matt Hardy. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone lose a match by being disqualified for that before. That was kind of weak…just like the rest of tonight’s episode of Superstars.
