Roy Jones Jr and Bernard Hopkins Agree to 2010 Fight

News

Roy Jones Jr has agreed to a fight with Bernard Hopkins in 2010, according to Dan Rafael at ESPN.com. Jones must first defeat Danny Green on December 2 in Australia. Assuming Roy Jones Jr gets the victory over Green, the Hopkins fight will occur in the first quarter of 2010.

The fighters have agreed to a 50/50 purse split but that could change to 60/40 if someone wins by knockout. That’s a nice purse clause that I wish a lot of other fighters would use.

Bernard Hopkins had been talking about a fight with Cruiserweight champion Tomasz Adamek or perhaps the winner of Chad Dawson vs Glen Johnson, so this news comes as a bit of a surprise. Roy Jones Jr defeated Hopkins by unanimous decision in 1993. I think it’s safe to say the moment has passed. It’s just a strange fight to make. Roy Jones Jr has little left in the tank. A Hopkins win wouldn’t exactly be redemption. It would just be a waste of time.
