2010 MLB Baseball Free Agent Class: Intro

Top Story

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be looking at the 2010 free agent class by team. I’ll list all of the free agents along with their Free Agent Status (A/B).

First, we’ll look at how Free Agent Compensation is determined.

Free agent status is determined by league, position, and stats. So, American League players are ranked against other AL players.

For the positions, there are 5 groupings:
1: 1B, OF, DH
2: 2B, 3B, SS
3: C
4: SP
5: RP

These are generally classed by skill – group 1 is more of hitting first group, while group 2 has better fielding players. You also have catchers separate since their position isn’t like one of the first 2 groups. They are also taken from a players primary position.

Each group is then given stats to weigh their value:
1: PA, Avg, OBP, HR, RBI
2: PA, Avg, OBP, HR, RBI, Fielding %, Total Chances at Position
3: PA, Avg, OBP, HR, RBI, Fielding %, Assists
4: Total Games (total starts + 0.5 x relief appearances), IP, W, W%, ERA, K
5: Total Games (total relief appearances + 2 x total starts), IP, W+Sv, IP/H, K/BB, ERA

All of this info is taken over a 2 year period; it balances out players who have career years in their walk season.
