Raphael Assuncao set to welcome Urijah Faber back at WEC 46

News

After several injuries forced Urijah Faber out of fighting for the past four months, “The California Kid” has finally landed a match up for his much anticipated return.

MMAWeekly.com reported the Faber will meet Raphael Assuncao at WEC 46, which is the first event of 2010 for the promotion.  The fight features two contenders in the featherweight division, which is currently ruled by Mike Thomas Brown.

Faber and Brown have one of the most exciting rivalries in the WEC. Brown upset Faber to win the 145-pound belt at WEC 36, and then defended it in a rematch with him at WEC 41. Faber once again looks to get back into a title fight to win back his belt.

Assuncao is coming off a split-decision victory over Yves Jabouin at WEC 43. The decisionwas confusing, but at least the winner was correct. Assuncao is undefeated in the WEC with two victories, while having lost only one out of his 15 professional fights.

Jose Aldo is the No. 1 challenger to Mike Brown’s featherweight belt. However, this fight will go a long way in determine who will fight for a belt after Aldo wins or loses his fight with the large featherweight Brown.

WEC 46 is set to open the year for the promotion. The event is scheduled for Jan. 10 in Sacramento, California at ARCO Arena. The venue will be a nice welcome back for Faber, “The California Kid”.
