UFC 108 Takes Another Hit: Silva vs. Belfort Off Card

News

The Jan. 2 card for the Ultimate Fighting Championship was potentially going to include a Heavyweight title fight between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin, a middleweight title fight between Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort, and a light heavyweight championship rematch between Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Lyoto Machida.

Last week we learned that the Machida-Rua rematch would not make the end of the year super-card. Today, UFC 108 has taken another hit with the loss of Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort.

MMAjunkie.com reported earlier today that Ed Soares informed them that the middleweight champion Silva would simply not be ready for the January date.

Soares was quoted as saying, “The latest is he’s not fighting Jan. 2.  That’s not going to happen. He won’t be ready.”

This is the second enormous loss for the UFC’s year end show, which is traditionally the biggest show every year. However, the card still features a highly anticipated heavyweight title between Lesnar and Carwin, along with a light heavyweight showdown between Thiago Silva and Rashad Evans.

Even though there have been several losses to the card, it will still feature several big fights that will still serve as solid entertainment on the second day of 2010. However, Anderson Silva and Brock Lesnar on the same card would have brought in unbelievable sales.
