This Week in Indies

Columns, Features

Welcome to another Week in the Indies and this I guess I should call the “Damn, this year is going too fast..” edition. But, alas, I won’t. Why bother telling you what you know already? It has been a crazy year in the world of professional wrestling. Captain Lou passing, Hogan going to TNA to possibly be the head booker (incredibly BIG trouble IMO), Ric Flair trying to get back in shape to work Australia, Nigel McGuinness going to WWE then switching gears to land in TNA to immediately make an impact and so much more!

The indie wrestling scene is as it always has been: confused. There are many promoters and bookers who spent a great many days confused and lost trying to figure out what will MAKE MONEY! IWA Mid-South goes toodles just to resurrect itself. It closed due to money and reopened due to money but the same issue: not having any. I was partners with a guy who wound up stealing 26k fro a charity just to have some of the boys he trained to pat him on the back and say sorry but we understand. Then they hate him. Then they understand. I for one don’t understand and nor do I care to. He retires and I and another fellow decide to go forward.. booking a card.. he explodes like an infant and I’m out because I refused to help them steal from an entirely different charity under the guise of “proceeds”.. bah.. confused. Not all indies are filled with liars, cheats and thieves.

Anyway – enough rambling and on with the results of this week past…

ASWF presented Fright Fest on the 31st in the lovely Tuckerman, AR. Over 230 wrestling fans came out to support the All-Star Wrestling Federation. Seth Sabor lost a grueling hardcore match to The Enforcer to start off the show. Cody Murdock won his match against Mark Wolf who was prowling for victory but just came up a little short. Christopher Lee defeated Tommy Wayne for their X-Division Title in a House of Horrors Match when Wayne took a chain to the head. X-Caliber over Morgan Williams in a casket match, Vinny Romano and Joshua Cross fought LSD in a death match and despite all their efforts lost, Tim Hanson defeated Gravedigger with a small package in under a minute during their steel cage match. Scott Fury defeated Ron Rage in the main event.

We go from Arkansas to Tennessee which is the home of TIWF (Tennessee Independent Wrestling). The Convict got busted by J-Rage, Sgt. Payne sent Oz back to the yellow brick road, Jett sideswiped Colonel DeKlerk to pick up the win, Blaine Devine over PK Ripper, in a special Halloween attraction match Michael Myers and Scream (btw – the “character” in Scream is the “Ghostface Killer”) defeated the Devil’s Rejects, Big Brad Simpson was able to pull one over on Kilo, Jett came back to pick up a second win but this time over Shannon Lee, Frankie Tucker landed a win over Chico Mendoza which was then turned over by the ref.

It is good to see that Ohio Valley Wrestling is putting on decent shows despite the WWE snubbing. So on to Ohio we go and a little OVW action. Demetrius (from Off Da Hook) and Jay Mills picked up a win over Guido Andretti and Randy Royal by DQ. Benny, the producer of the network, lost to Mr. B. In six-man action Kamikaze Kid along with CJ Lane and Epiphany took the match away from Sucio, Jessica Cheyanne and Taryn Shay. Eye Candy Ali was defeated by Hog Wild, Big Men on Campus beat Beef Wellington and Asher Knight. DC Spencer took a tough loss to Mike Mondo and for a little Halloween mayhe, Low Rider got the win over Vic the Bruiser in a casket match.

For our final stop on the tour (yea, I know, slow wrestling week) we head to Georgia and Championship Wrestling Overload’s debut in Milledgeville. Not a bad night with a little over 100 in attendance. The show started with CWO dissolving the National Heavyweight Championship. As a result DAR was handed the World Heavyweight Championship. The curtain jerk match saw Sin City Mafia defeating Roscoe Ray and Cowboy. Ray turned on his partner post-match and Jesse James came out to lend a hand. Much to his surprise Cowboy’s younger brother pushed through the crowd to help out his brother. They made a fast retreat but a match between the newly formed Cowboys from Hell and Roscoe Ray and Jesse James has been signed for November 14th. Mr. TWA and Steven Stiles lost to Brandon Kage, James Blvd lost to Ballanger, Jake Slater took Christian Walker to the mat, Derrick Andrew Reynolds and Velvet Jones wrestled to a 20 minute draw. The main event was a barned-wire match which saw Damien and Chris Storm defeating The Original VIP.
