2009 Pulse Wrestling Fantasy Draft: Rounds #2-6

Columns, Features

First off, I want to thank every reader of the “Pulse Wrestling Fantasy Draft”. This new project is getting way more exposure than I ever thought it would. In fact, my first post regarding the draft went down as being my most viewed ever since I joined Pulse Wrestling in this past summer. Again, thanks for everything. Hopefully, some of you will bear with my company, Full Force Wrestling, even though I am being detested for picking Rob Van Dam in the first round.

Speaking of the first round of the draft, if you haven’t already, be sure to check that out, as well as general information regarding the “Pulse Wrestling Fantasy Draft” before continuing through this very article.

Round #2

David Brashear of New Generation Wrestling (NGW) selects AJ Styles.

The Phenominal AJ Styles has risen through the ranks of TNA from a talented blue-chipper to a former world champion. Talented with skills both in the air and on the mat, Styles has proven himself to be a legitimate threat to any title holder. That will doubtless be the same in NGW. But the question remains – with talent in the world title arena, cruiserweight division, and tag team ranks, which division will Styles choose to focus on? And will it be only one division?

Michael O’Mahony of Lost Art Wrestling (LAW) selects Shawn Michaels.

Though age and injuries have taken their toll on Michaels, he is still a star in this industry and one of the most recognizable performers in the world. LAW sees this as an opportunity to head up the promotion with a marketable name who fits the ethos of the promotion, and a wrestler of no little talent who – now he appears to have put his years of political wrangling and immaturity behind him – can serve not only as a main eventer, but as a locker room leader and mentor.

Roy Reynolds of Full Force Wrestling (FFW) selects Kurt Angle.

A lunatic, yes, but Kurt Angle is undeniably one of the best pure wrestlers in professional wrestling history. How many guys can say that they are an Olympic gold medalist, for crying out loud? Angle has always been a guy that defies main event material and will certainly take that spot in FFW, as well.

Grey Scherl of Real Ass Pro Wrestling (RAPW) selects John Morrison.

The only Tough Enough winner to truly amount to something in the wrestling business, John has grown during his tenure in the WWE. No longer looked at as the new kid in town, John has had the chance to show his stuff during feuds with Jeff Hardy, CM Punk, and a great tag team run with The Miz. He’s definitely not too far off from a run in the main event, and RAPW will be happy to give it to him. In my own words, he’s the next Shawn Michaels.

Raffi Shamir of Just Pro Wrestling (JPW) selects Austin Aries.

Though he still hasn’t made it big on the national level, Aries is nothing but untapped potential. With the ability to put on good matches and his outspoken personality, Aries is just waiting to explode in a major promotion and make his mark.

Steven Gepp of Generic Wrestling Promotion #25 (GNW-25) selects Robert Roode and James Storm, Beer Money Inc.

These two are becoming quite the stand-outs in the tag scene in TNA. Not only as a team, but individually both bring something unique to the table. They do not seem to be afraid to try something new, and they seem to be willing to do what is required by their company. That and the fact I just plain like ’em!

Mark Allen of Prime Championship Wrestling (PCW) selects “The Instant Classic” Christian.

At last! You’re free! Christian is one of the most versatile talents in wrestling today. He can work equally adept as both a babyface and a heel. He has the perfect size to look credible in the main event and still agile and talented enough to mix it up withe cruiserweights of tday.

Pulse Glazer of Pro Wrestling Company (PWC) selects Nigel McGuinness (formerly known as Desmond Wolfe).

This cocky heel is the perfect foil for John Cena. His wrestling and style will make for great matches with the perennial Wrestlemania Main Eventer, while his horrible heelishness will drive the marks nuts, and give the smarks someone to rally behind. Besides, no one looks more like a star who deserves to be punched in the face than Nigel strutting down to the ring with his shades on.

Big Andy Mac of International World Class All Star Professional Championship Wrestling Global Alliance and Grappling Arts Federation Unlimited (IWCASPCWGAAGAFU) selects KENTA.

In keeping with the international flavor of this prestigious wrestling company we select one of the top wrestlers from across the Pacific. KENTA is also a perennial rival of our first pick Bryan Danielson, so the possibilities that poses alone are quite epic. KENTA will make a strong addition to an already impressive roster.

Round #3

Big Andy Mac of International World Class All Star Professional Championship Wrestling Global Alliance and Grappling Arts Federation Unlimited (IWCASPCWGAAGAFU) selects Paul London.

While injuries and questioned dedication have limited this outstanding wrestler’s appearances over the last calendar year he has proven one of the most underrated stars in the world. IWCASPCWGAAGAFU has it on good authority that one of the Hybrid Dolphins is ready to fully dedicate himself to the Fed with the longest name, and we here at IWCASPCWGAAGAFU are thrilled to have this star in our ranks.

Pulse Glazer of Pro Wrestling Company (PWC) selects The Rock (general manager).

That’s right, the Rock will be heading up my promotion. How will the best promo in wrestling interact on a weekly basis with stars John Cena and Nigel McGuinness? Tune in to find out!

Mark Allen of Prime Championship Wrestling (PCW) selects “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair (general manager).

WOOO! Flair, while away from in-ring competition, is the perfect man to spearhead the wild personalities that will make up PCW. He knows what it’s like to be on top of a promotion and understands what these wrestlers will do to reach the top.

Raffi Shamir of Just Pro Wrestling (JPW) selects Triple H.

Triple H is one of the biggest names in wrestling for over a decade. While his best days are behind him, when he is motivated he can still deliver excellent promos and great matches against the right opponents. JPW promises to make the most of everything that Triple H has to offer in this day and age.

Grey Scherl of Real Ass Pro Wrestling (RAPW) selects The Undertaker.

19-0 at Wrestlemania. 7 time World Champion. The Undertaker is a legend in his own right, and a definite future hall of famer. And on top of that, he can still outwork so many of the young guys that it isn’t even funny. Barring someone else having drafted him and me missing the post, RAPW are proud to have him.

Roy Reynolds of Full Force Wrestling (FFW) selects Chris Hero.

Ever since Bryan Danielson signed a contract with World Wrestling Entertainment, it’s undeniable that “That Young Knockout Kid” is the new king of the independent scene. Hero always changes up his offense and knows how to get crowd reactions, whether he’s a babyface or heel. Hero recently held the PWG World Championship for 425 days and had a successful tour with Pro Wrestling NOAH. With all that said, FFW is more than pleased to welcome Chris Hero to their roster.

Michael O’Mahony of Lost Art Wrestling (LAW) selects Alex Shelley.

While Shelley has more recently been known as a tag team wrestler, and gained notoriety as a member of several factions – most notably ROH’s Generation Next – LAW management believes it’s past time for this supremely talented performer to strike out on his own. A gifted wrestler with a great look, Shelley is a natural both on the mic and in scripted segments, and has exactly the kind of potential LAW will provide the opportunity to fulfill.

David Brashear of New Generation Wrestling (NGW) selects Brent Albright.

The Shooter Brent Albright is a submission specialist, much in the same vein as Dean Malenko. Albright doesn’t speak much. He doesn’t have to. He says all he needs to in the ring. Let the NGW roster be warned.

Round #4

David Brashear of New Generation Wrestling (NGW) selects The Miz.

Mike Mizanin, the Miz, rose to fame through reality television. That culminated with his run on Tough Enough which earned him a place on the WWE roster. While there, Mizanin rose to even greater heights while paired with John Morrison. Now totally free of Morrison’s shadow, Mizanin finally has the chance to shine on his own.

Michael O’Mahony of Lost Art Wrestling (LAW) selects Shelton Benjamin.

One of the most gifted and convincing in-ring performers in the game, The Gold Standard has been criminally wasted over the last few years. Yet Benjamin has proven his dedication to his craft by getting his head down and working through all the awful gimmicks and go-nowhere storylines, making every match worth watching and taking the time and energy to improve the level of his promos and his acting. LAW management believe Benjamin still has a great deal more to offer the business.

Roy Reynolds of Full Force Wrestling (FFW) selects Christopher Daniels (formerly known as Daniels.

Despite being up their in age, Christopher Daniels still may be one of the top high-fliers in all of wrestling to this day. Regardless of what promotions he has wrestled for, Daniels has always been a dominant force. He has won the TNA X-Division Championship on three different occasions, as well as the ROH World Tag Team Championship a couple of times. Daniels also had a successful run as “Curry Man” in Japan. FFW is more than happy to welcome Daniels onto their roster.

Grey Scherl of Real Ass Pro Wrestling (RAPW) selects Montel Vontavious Porter.

Despite his former ‘Power Rangers’ body suit, and TO gimmick, MVP has grown into one of the most well rounded workers in the WWE. On top of that his natural charisma means that he’s aces at working the crowd. He’s one of the longest reigning US champions, and hey, he hosts the MVP Lounge. That’s bank.

Raffi Shamir of Just Pro Wrestling (JPW) selects Matt Hardy.

Matt Hardy made a name for himself with his brother Jeff as one of the greatest teams of the last decade, The Hardy Boyz. On his own, Matt Hardy V1 was a gimmick that preceded its time. Matt Hardy has been on the verge of making it to the top for a long time and JPW plans to be the place where he will be able to fulfill his potential.

Steven Gepp of Generic Wrestling Promotion #25 (GNW-25) selects Jim Ross (play-by-play commentator).

The best play-by-play commentator going around. This man’s ability to put the story of the match across without histrionics is fabtastic. He can work with anyone else. And his knowledge of wrestling – while not complete – will be an advantage to any fledgling promotion. And so, to call the play we are pleased to welcome Good Ol’ JR on board.

Mark Allen of Prime Championship Wrestling (PCW) selects Sting.

Sting brings years of main event success and experience to any roster. His longevity and talent brings credibility to PCW. He is a veteran leader of the rocker room and a World Champion many times over that can give the rub to those he works with and against.

Pulse Glazer of Pro Wrestling Company (PWC) selects Davey Richards.

The heir to Dynamite Kid’s style of wrestling, his skill cannot be overstated. In fact, it’s so great, that Danielson named Richards the heir to the title “the best wrestler in the world.” Of course, Davey, never one to take a handout, now has a chip on his shoulder and will prove he’s the best. He’ll do so in PWC, so be ready for the most crisp, high impact wrestling around- with an attitude.

Big Andy Mac of International World Class All Star Professional Championship Wrestling Global Alliance and Grappling Arts Federation Unlimited (IWCASPCWGAAGAFU) selects William Regal.

With the Far East and the United States well represented it only seems fitting that one of the best European wrestlers to ever cross the pond joins up with the International World Class All Stars. Regal may be the most underrated wrestler of the last 25 years. He is an amazing talker, wrestler, mentor and presence. He is exactly what we need.

Round #5

Big Andy Mac of International World Class All Star Professional Championship Wrestling Global Alliance and Grappling Arts Federation Unlimited (IWCASPCWGAAGAFU) selects Naruki Doi and Masato Yoshino, Speed Muscle.

We don’t select just any tag team, but one of the best that Dragon Gate has to offer: Naruki Doi and Masato Yoshino aka Speed Muscle. Naruki Doi may be the best thing going in Dragon Gate. That only means he could be the best thing going in IWCASCPWAAGAFU. Yoshino is one of the most blindingly explosive wrestlers anywhere and one can only assume that these two will be the cornerstone of IWCASCPWAAGAFU’s tag team division.

Pulse Glazer of Pro Wrestling Company (PWC) selects Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase Jr., Legacy.

Many have called Dibiase the top young talent they’ve seen, the fastest riser ever. He’s at most a couple years from Main Eventing Wrestlemania and makes a great addition to PWC. Cody Rhodes is more of a wrestler’s wrestler. He understands old-school build to matches and appears set to live up to and maybe surpass the legend of his father, Dusty Rhodes. PWC looks forward to seeing how these men interact with the Rock and John Cena, especially since, like those two, Ted is a movie star now.

Mark Allen of Prime Championship Wrestling (PCW) selects “The Warrior” Low Ki (formerly known as Kaval).

The Brooklyn warrior has competed under a variety of names over his storied career, but no matter his name his reputation proceeds him. The founding father of ROH has laid waste to competition every where he has competed and now he will bring his unique offensive style to the rings of PCW.

Steven Gepp of Generic Wrestling Promotion #25 (GNW-25) selects Hulk Hogan (general manager).

Hulk Hogan – the name is almost synonymous with professional wrestling. Even non-fans know who the Hulkster is. And while his best years in the ring may be behind him, the name value and wrestling knowledge he will bring to the role of general manager of this new company will be invaluable. So it is with great pleasure we welcome the icon of professional wrestling, the immortal Hulk Hogan into the fold.

Raffi Shamir of Just Pro Wrestling (JPW) selects Eric Bischoff (general manager).

Eric Bischoff is known as the only person who ever gave Vince McMahon true competition but also as one of the driving forces behind the demise of that competition. But when he came to work for McMahon as General Manager of Raw, Bischoff showed that he still had a lot to deliver as a GM. Bischoff will rule JPW with an iron fist and will deliver the shows that would put butts in seats.

Grey Scherl of Real Ass Pro Wrestling (RAPW) selects Rey Mysterio.

For such a small guy, he’s become such a huge star in his day. I mean, seriously, I’m bigger then Rey Rey, and he’s a former World Heavyweight Champion. Aside from the fact that even with his knee issues he’s proven himself to be a still incredible worker, Rey also attracts Latino viewers as well as kids. That mask sells, you know?

Roy Reynolds of Full Force Wrestling (FFW) selects Paul Heyman (general manager).

Paul Heyman will always go down as history as being one of my favorite general managers of all-time. Not only that, but he was the creative genius behind Extreme Championship Wrestling. Without Heyman, ECW would not have been nearly as successful as it once was. Heyman will come out of retirement to serve as the general manager of Full Force Wrestling, where he will continue to impress wrestling fans around the world.

Michael O’Mahony of Lost Art Wrestling (LAW) selects Matt Striker (general manager).

Though an ever-improving color man, what strikes LAW as Striker’s most endearing and valuable quality is his passion for and knowledge about the pro wrestling business. In addition to this, Striker has a past reputation as a strong promo man and charismatic presence. LAW seeks a General Manager not to be a antagonist in the promotion, but to represent its fans and be the onscreen proponent of what they want to see. We believe Matt Striker is the perfect individual to fulfill this role.

David Brashear of New Generation Wrestling (NGW) selects Colt Cabana.

Cabana has everything that it takes to make a star. He’s got the moves. He’s got the charisma. And yet when he was picked up by the WWE, he was saddled with a gimmick that didn’t fully utilize those skills. NGW plans to give him that chance.

Round #6

David Brashear of New Generation Wrestling (NGW) selects Rey Bucanero and Último Guerrero, Los Guerreros de Infierno.

Rey Bucanero and Ultimo Guerrero have been a tag team for a decade and have always been a threat to the CMLL world tag team titles. They later went to form a stable under the name of the Guerreros del Infierno that dominated CMLL for years. They were even a part of TNA’s winning Team Mexico in the 2008 World X Cup Tournament. Whether together or separate, both Bucanero and Guerrero have held championship gold. Now they are making their way to NGW. How will they match up to the best of the world in the NGW tag team division?

Michael O’Mahony of Lost Art Wrestling (LAW) selects Naomichi Marufuji.

At just twenty-nine years of age, the supremely talented Marufuji boasts a grand slam of Pro Wrestling NOAH championships and several successful excursions to the US as a guest of ROH. Comparatively experienced for his age and undoubtedly more than ready for big things, Marufuji’s arsenal of next-gen offense will no doubt go over very well indeed with LAW’s target audience.

Roy Reynolds of Full Force Wrestling (FFW) selects Homicide and Hernandez, the Latin American Xchange.

At one point, it wasn’t hard to make a claim that the Latin American Xchange were the best tag team in all of professional wrestling. Homicide was able to deliver with his high-flying and brawling skills, while Hernandez backed him up with power. While LAX has since disbanded on Impact, Homicide and Hernandez are unquestionably looking forward to resuming their tag team run in FFW as the top duo in all of the company.

Grey Scherl of Real Ass Pro Wrestling (RAPW) selects “Stone Cold” Steve Austin (general manager).

Austin is one of the biggest draws in the history of the business, and was the herald of the attitude era. The six time WWF champ carried the company on his back (and injured neck) for years before injury forced him to step down, and the attitude era officially ended. Though his time in the ring may be over, Austin brings more charisma to the table then he knows what to do with, and the mentality that allows him to still give the Stunner out to anyone who pisses him off. What?

Raffi Shamir of Just Pro Wrestling (JPW) selects Tyson Kidd and David Hart Smith, the Hart Dynasty.

This fresh young tag team burst on the scene earlier this year and easily became a force to be reckoned with. With the family pedigree of Smith and the training that Kidd had at the Dungeon, the sky is the limit for Hart and Kidd. Thia duo from Calgary, Alberta Canada have a lot of expectations to meet, and they plan on doing just that.

Steven Gepp of Generic Wrestling Promotion #25 (GNW-25) selects Joe Hennig.

The PWI 2008 rookie of the year has the genes and talent to make it in the big time. Already a former Florida Heavyweight champ and tag champ, he has battled many. With the right environment he could be as big a name as his father and grandfather. AND GNW-25 is proud to give him that opportunity.

Mark Allen of Prime Championship Wrestling (PCW) selects “The Livewire” Evan Bourne.

Bourne has dazzled audiences with his aerial skills and technical ability. Now the light heavyweight star looks to bring his talents to PCW. He has had his share of success in the past but now is the time for Evan Bourne to become the superstar he is destined to be.

Rounds seven through eleven will be featured in the next “Pulse Wrestling Fanatsy Draft” update. At the rate I’m going at right now, I would assume that it will be posted around the middle of next week. Keep your eyes peeled and let’s keep those comments coming.
