WWE Vintage Collection Recap – 11/23/09

Reviews, Shows, TV Shows

Welcome to another week of Vintage collection. This week we’re continuing our look back at previous Survivor Series matches.

We’re beginning today with a match from Survivor Series 1995. And it’s Goldust vs. Bam Bam Bigelow. Goldust is up on the apron as we come in, and Bigelow is outside, Goldust uses the steps to keep him down. They go back into the ring, and Bigelow is able to hit a slam, but when he tries to hit a headbutt, he misses. Goldust keeps him down with submission moves. Bigelow is able to reverse by lifting Goldust up onto his shoulders and brings him crashing down backwards. This hurts both men, and Goldust is the first one up. Punches are exchanged, and as they come to standing, Goldust hits a clothesline to knock Bigelow down. Side headlock is locked in, and Bigelow uses his power to get out of it. Bigelow delivers some clotheslines to a two count. Bigelow tries to slam into Goldust, and as Goldust moves, Bigelow slams himself into the turnbuckle. Goldust delivers a bulldog for the three count and the win.

Our Survivor Series elimination match comes from the 1997 event. (Which is also where the Montreal screwjob occurred). And it’s between Ken Shamrock, Ahmed Johnson & Legion of Doom vs. Nation of Domination (Faarooq, Kama Mustafa, D’Lo Brown & Rocky Maivia (The Rock). We come in to D’Lo in with Hawk, as Hawk hits a neckbreaker and D’Lo tags in Maivia. Hawk tries to take control, someone on the outside delivers a blow to him, and Maivia hits a side slam (Rock Bottom) to a three count. Eliminating Hawk.

Johnson comes in, and the men exchange punches. Johnson hits an elbow, and Maivia tags in Kama. We’re shown that Kama was the one to hit Hawk from the outside. Kama knocks Johnson down with a clothesline and tags in Faarooq. Who delivers some kicks and a backbreaker. Johnson is pushed into the corner and the Nation of Domination punch him and hit him with a leather strap while the ref is distracted. Johnson is able to reverse things to hit a Pearl River Plunge to a three count. Faarooq is eliminated.

D’Lo comes in, and he knocks Johnson down and then hits a splash from the top rope. Johnson gets back to his feet and starts to take control. Hits a driver, and then Maivia is tagged in. Johnson knocks Maivia down, and when Johnson goes to run the ropes, Faarooq grabs his ankle, knocking him down. Maivia rolls him over and as Faarooq holds his ankle from the outside, the ref counts three. Ahmed Johnson is eliminated. And we see Johnson chase Faarooq up the ramp and they start to fight.

Back in, Kama hits a kick to knock Animal down, and then showboats around the ring. Animal comes up from behind, drop kicks him into Maivia, and rolls him up with a school boy to get the three count. Eliminating Kama Mustafa.

D’Lo comes in but Animal hits a clothesline and Shamrock comes in. Shamrock delivers a series of punches, and a clothesline knocking D’Lo down. D’Lo rakes him in the eyes, tries to knock Animal off the apron. Animal tries to get into the ring. This distracts the ref. And D’Lo holds Shamrock’s legs apart, to give Maivia a chance to hit a low blow. Maivia goes back to the apron, and D’Lo tries to get a three count. D’Lo gets a snapmare takeover and a leg drop to another two count. A chokehold keeps Shamrock down. And D’Lo just keeps delivering offense until he goes up high, and misses Shamrock when he tries to hit a moonsault. Both men make tags to their partners, and Animal starts tearing both Maivia and D’Lo apart with dropkicks.

We see the New Age Outlaws dressed as the Legion of Doom come down the ramp towards the ring. They’re wearing the stolen shoulder pieces that belong to the Legion of Doom. And they throw something in the eyes of Animal on the outside of the ring when he goes to attack them. This leaves Animal as the legal man on the outside, and he gets counted out and eliminated.

Back in, D’Lo is beating on Shamrock. and Maivia is tagged in. They go for a clothesline, and Shamrock avoids it and manages to hit a double clothesline on both Maivia and D’Lo. Maivia is sent to the outside, and Shamrock hits a belly to back suplex straight into an ankle lock on D’Lo. D’Lo taps here and is eliminated.

Maivia comes in from behind with a chair, and while the ref is distracted getting D’Lo out of the ring, Maivia uses the chair to hit Shamrock. This only leads to a two count. Maivia works on Shamrock in the corner of the ring. Eventually Shamrock is able to come back with some right hands of his own. Shamrock is able to reverse an irish whip, but it’s Maivia who gets the upper hand here managing to hit a spinning DDT. But only to a two count. Maivia hits the People’s Elbow, but again, only a two count. Shamrock gets up here and delivers a series of punches to a northern lights suplex. Both men are down here to a five count. Shamrock is able to hit a hurricanrana, is able to get an arm bar in, and changes it around to an ankle lock. Maivia taps out here, eliminating himself. Ken Shamrock is the survivor in this match.

Our main event comes from Survivor Series 1996. And it’s Bret Hart vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin. We come in to see that Hart is running the ropes until Austin picks him up and drops him on the ring ropes neck first. Austin tries to gain control here and ends up choking up Hart on the bottom ropes. Austin is focusing on Hart’s neck here, stomping on it, and slingshotting Hart up into the bottom rope. He slides out of the ring and sends an elbow into the neck of Hart as he hangs over the apron. Austin gets back into the ring as Hart is on the outside. He pulls Hart up onto the apron, and then pulls him down neck first into the top rope. Austin remains in control here, eventually locking in a reverse chinlock. He changes his tactic getting up to drop a knee over Hart’s neck before going back into another reverse chinlock after a failed three count. Hart manages to get to his feet and break the hold, but it doesn’t do much for him. Austin stays in control until Hart is able to reverse an irish whip and send Austin into the turnbuckles. Hart continues the beatdown, pulling off a lot until Austin is able to slam him into the turnbuckles. We go to an ad break.

Back in, Hart is sitting on the top rope, and as Austin tries to pull him down, Hart is able to reverse it and send Austin falling face first into the mat. Hart hits an elbow from the top rope but he takes a while to go for the cover. Hart picks Austin up for a sidewalk slam, but Austin rakes his eyes to gain some control. Austin throws Hart outside the ring into the barrier. And Austin follows him out, dropping forearms and smashing him into the ring post. Austin jumps back into the ring and then out again to try and continue. Hart finally is able to smash Austin into the barrier. Both men roll back into the ring, and Austin rolls out the other side. Hart goes after him but it doesn’t go his way. There is a slingshot from Austin which sends Hart flying onto the announce table. Hart is left there as we go to an ad break.

We’re back again, and Hart hits a backbreaker on Austin inside the ring, he goes up to the top rope, but Austin is able to crotch him there and begins to deliver a series of punches. Austin also goes up to the top rope and hits a suplex from there which knocks both men down, but Austin is able to get a two count. And out of nowhere, he hits a Stone Cold Stunner which only leads to a two count because he wasted time pulling Hart into the middle of the ring. Austin tries over and over again for covers which only lead to two counts each time. He then pulls Hart into a Texas cloverleaf submission but Hart is able to pull himself to the ropes to break the hold. Things stay on Austin’s side here when Hart goes ribs first into the ring post, and then he puts Hart into a bow and arrow submission. Hart reverses and tries to lock in the sharpshooter but Austin is able to grab the ropes to break it up. Hart tries to lock in a sleeper hold which is broken when Austin falls down into a jawbreaker. From here, Austin locks in a million dollar dream, and as he holds it, Hart climbs the ropes with his feet, pushes off and over, and as Austin keeps the hold locked in, Hart is able to keep his shoulders down for a three count. The winner here, Bret Hart.

That’s all she wrote this week, and it’s our last trip down memory lane for Survivor Series events. We’ll be back with more Vintage fun next week.
