A desperate disaster hits the lane as this season’s tenth episode finally arrives… And it arrives on an airport (sorry for that… just couldn’t help myself!)

Spoiler-free zone:

“Boom Crunch” was the title of the episode, and it couldn’t be more fitting. Throughout my anticipation for this disaster episode, I couldn’t help but say to myself “I am really not in the mood for big drama”. Well the writers must have heard me, because this was probably the funniest disaster episode from the series. Don’t get me wrong though; there is drama and even a cliff-hanger but the moments leading up to the disaster weren’t just filler scenes.

Spoiler zone:

The episode begins with showing a married couple (yes the husband is Homer Simpson’s voice) in the verge of breaking up. The husband is a pilot, and in an attempt to cheer up his wife he has her join him on his little two seat plane. Things don’t go well when the couple agrees to file for divorce and in the heat of the moment the husband has a heart attack (expect some witty moments during that conversation). The wife, unable to fly the plane, is forced to glide on Wisteria Lane where everyone is preparing for Christmas (We get the chance to see some cool aerial shots of the street). The episode then goes 3 days in the past (a common formula for the disaster episodes). The storylines kick off from there.

In Susan’s storyline we see that apparently Katherine is accusing Mike of stabbing her (she stabbed herself in case you have forgotten) and Susan meets with Bob (who is a lawyer) so they can find a solution. In an attempt to put some sense to Katherine, Susan calls Katherine’s daughter, Dylan, (which we haven’t seen since season 4) and pretends to be a British nurse from the hospital Katherine is in. Teri Hatcher’s fake British accent is spot on. When Dylan returns, Susan finds out that Katherine has been telling Dylan that Susan was trying to steal Mike from Katherine. When Susan shows Dylan her wedding pictures with Mike, Dylan confronts her. Dana Delany shows how good of a dramatic actress she is, when she gives a very raw performance of Katherine’s probably final breakdown, in the hospital.

As far as the feud between Gaby and Lynette is concerned, we see that everything is still heated up between them. They provide most of the comedy for this episode and their little arguments are interwoven with the rest of the stories. When Tom is forced to quit college, Lynette goes to Gaby for an apology but is shut down immediately. When all the housewives start singing Christmas carols in the Christmas event, Lynette and Gaby start fighting over a Santa hat and Bree fires them from carolling so they can fix their differences. While it seems they don’t, during the plane crash Lynette saves Celia from being hit by the plane. Probably that will put an end to their fight.

Angie, in this episode has even bigger problems now, since Mona (a neighbour that as a nurse took care of Danny) finds out accidentally (by Danny) what the Bolen secret is. She blackmails Angie afterwards, demanding sixty seven thousand dollars. Angie goes to pay Mona a bit before the plane crashes, with only ten thousand dollars and a family ring. At that point, Angie spots the plane and manages to run from it just in time but without warning Mona. Thus, very conveniently (but I guess that’s what we all wanted), Mona get’s smashed by the plane’s wing and is presumed dead. I guess you can’t mess with a suspicious family in Wisteria lane. (Season 3 sucker= shot in the head, Season 4 sucker= sucked by tornado, Season 5 sucker= strangled)…

In Bree’s story, she finally blackmails Orson to a divorce, although she didn’t quite get the reaction she expected. Orson was calm and accepted the reality with his head up high. It’s amazing how in the end of season 5 I said to myself that I couldn’t go back to liking Orson, yet here I am feeling sorry for him. Later on, it is revealed that the job the couple, in the plane, had to do was to fly the plane with a banner saying “BREE WILL YOU MARRY ME, LOVE KARL” (hired by Karl of course). When Bree finds that out, during the Christmas event on Wisteria Lane, she forces Karl to try and cancel the plane, since she wanted her divorce to go by quietly. While Karl agrees, he also decides to tell Orson about the affair by taking him inside one of the decorative Christmas houses, and telling him everything. Some funny physical comedy follows as Orson and Karl begin to fight, while Bree tries to separate them. However, as the plane crashes on the street, the little decorative house gets destroyed by one of the wings. Mary Alice then implies that one hasn’t survived…

To sum up, while the disaster part of the episode (the actual landing of the plane) is short, the episode as a whole delivers, while managing to be uplifting but at the same time suspenseful. (I felt the need to highlight this because I think it summarizes what the episode offers, accurately). See you in 2010 desperate fans! Have a very Merry Christmas and I will miss every single one of you and your parents and your pets!
