10 Thoughts on ROH on HDNet – 12.14.2009

Reviews, Shows, TV Shows

1. Very entertaining, fast-paced affair between Kenny King and Delirious. I was concerned that the ringside extracurriculars by Rhett Titus and Daizee Haze were going to detract from the match, but they got it out of the way early on and focused on the in-ring action.

2. I doubt anybody would buy someone like Delirious in a long feud over the ROH World Title, but as a one-shot deal for a TV main event or Friday night show preceding one of the major shows, he’d be fine, and likely deliver a quality match. And that’s another good thing about the Pick 6 Series.

3. Does anyone else think Jim Cornette was taking a potshot at the likes of Mick Foley and Kevin Nash when he called himself the only guy in pro wrestling that recognizes when it’s time to stay away from the ring and stay backstage, especially in light of his most recent comments about his TNA tenure?

4. I’m still not sure what they’re planning on doing with Steve Corino this time around. Part of the story seems to be that Corino feels that he is above wrestling jobbers, but he just doesn’t look like he is in shape to do anything of consequence in the ring. He is probably better off serving as a manager and mouthpiece for someone, as he is a pretty good talker.

5. ROH hasn’t done as much with Dutt as I expected. I didn’t expect him to be an instant main-eventer or anything, but so far, he has lost a feud with Delirious, only been booked sporadically, and has no chance in Hell of winning against Tyler Black tonight. He’ll probably still be good for the occasional fun performance in Four Corners Survival or Scramble action, but that’s about it. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

6. ROH needs to find some better jobbers for its mid-show squash matches. If you’re going to have Erick Stevens throw someone around like a rag doll (which he looked pretty good doing), why not go for a 190-200 pounder, as opposed to a 145-155 pounder, and make Stevens look just a little stronger?

7. Very good reaction for Tyler Black in his in-ring return. You have to give him credit for managing to stay over despite being booked like a chump and an also-ran time and time again.

8. I couldn’t see Hogwood when he called the Black-Dutt match one of the most intense he’s seen in a long time, but between the Final Countdown matches, Aries’ title defenses, and American Wolves’ tag title defenses, he couldn’t have possibly said that with a straight face.

9. With that said, Black and Dutt put on a good match. There was a pretty slow middle section, but good stuff overall. This also indicates that Dutt may be able to do pretty well for himself if matched up with ROH’s top talent more frequently, but I doubt he’ll get that chance.

10. OK show tonight, although last week’s epsiode gave it a very tough act to follow. The middle portion was pretty dull, but both Pick 6 matches were good, which bodes very well for episodes of ROH on HDNet going forward.
