Big Box Office Numbers For Christmas

News

Avatar had already been destroying competition since it was released in theaters last week, but a few big openings come Christmas have given it a few stiff tests. Call it “elementary, dear Watson.”

Robert Downey Jr’s next film Sherlock Holmes opened up yesterday and early estimates have it bringing in $25 million. James Cameron’s Avatar is supposedly not far behind though with an estimated $24 million on Christmas day. Rumors are that this may be the first weekend ever that sees two films gross over $70 million.

Both films have already broken Christmas day records though as the previous biggest opening was Meet The Fockers with $19.5 million.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel opened up on Wednesday with a very good $18.8 million and added another $12 million on Friday. The other new release on Christmas was the romantic comedy It’s Complicated which brought in an estimated $7.5 million.

This is shaping up to be one of the biggest weekends at the box office ever and plenty of records could fall before it is through. Final numbers will be out later today and throughout the weekend.
